What caliber for 16" rifle

What caliber for 16" rifle - 11/24/14 06:30 PM

I just got my first suppressor and realize that I should have gotten one a long time ago.

I would like a 16" rifle for deer and hog hunting. What caliber/calibers would be a good choice for a 16" barrel? I'm looking to keep this rig short but hopefully accurate out to at least 300 yards. I know there are some real gun experts on here and I appreciate the help.

Re: What caliber for 16" rifle - 11/24/14 08:16 PM

Will the 6.5 creedmoor do well in a SBR maybe 12-14" barrel?

I don't mind having this thing built. Sometimes I hear certain calibers don't work well in a short barrel or with the wrong twist rate. I like my .308 but I wasn't sure if it would be a good caliber for a short barrel. Does the 6.5 creedmoor have more or less wind drift than a .308?

Thanks

I shoot a CMMG MK3 CBR 16" carbine 308 suppressed and it is plenty accurate out way past 300 yards. Shot out to 800 on steel at FiremanJG's long range course. It was running right at around 2500+/- FPS with 168gr AMAX.

Do y'all at Horizon cut barrels and thread them? I have been looking at getting a suppressor, my 6.5 CM is 22 inches.

I am not class 3 so we do not do anything shorter than 16.5 so I cant speak to that. The creedmoor will run circles backwards around the 308 in the wind

6.5 Creedmoor, 7mm-08, 6 Creedmoor, .308

Yes the 6.5 Creedmoor will buck wind better than a 308, but 300 yards and in it's not much of a noticeable difference.

If I were you, I get MVs and BCs from those that shoot each of those cartridges and plug those numbers into JBMBallistics and see what you see. KRoyal already gave you his data. I'm sure TexFlip will share his data, and Drew has a 17" 7-08. I'll send him a text asking his numbers. Then which ever shows up with the most energy delivery at 300 yards wins. Bet I already know the answer to this...

Drew is shooting this bullet out of a 17" 7mm-08, making 2550 fps MV.

I have no problems with a 16 1/2" .308 at 300 yards. What caliber is your suppressor in, by the way?
