varmint gun - 11/17/14 05:13 PM

I am looking for a varmint rifle. I thought I wanted a .22, but don't really know. I need suggestions and comparisons. I will use it to shoot squirrels, armadillos, skunks, rats, etc. Is there anything to compare to the .22 as far as noise, power, bullet price and availability, and any other comparisons you can make. What about a .17 caliber? My wife would like to go target shooting with this. We don't want a fancy automatic. I would really appreciate your thoughts on this.

17 is a fun little round... but u want a rimfire or a centerfire? .22 has more options for ammo and more common to see in a semi

The .22 Hornet has its shortcomings but it might be ideal for your purposes.

22 LR will suit your needs and be the cheapest. Ammo is a concern recently.

I wouldn't want to pay close to $2 a round to shoot rats and squirrels.

Let me rephrase. I wouldn't want to spend more than $0.10 a round to shoot rats and squirrels. My vote is for the .22lr.

17 hmr or 22 mag would be my choice, if you want to shoot targets with the wife I'd get the 17 hmr.

Just saying, a 22 hornet will get you a lot more bang on the muzzle end and you can reload it for probably closer to your .10 a round than you might think. Sure if birds rats and squirrels are your main targets sure a 22 lr makes all the since in the world. If your going to get into coons coyotes porcupines etc the hornet would do a better job at an insignificantly higher cost.
