My father in law is looking for one. I personally never shot one. He is looking for a semi auto or bolt action. Any advice?

I have a savage bolt action that is wicked accurate and a blast to shoot. you should get one!

I have a Marlin bolt action I got about 10 years ago. Great squirrel/varmint gun and the best $165 I've spent in a while (don't think they're that cheap anymore). Really accurate and the hollow points are pretty mean for a .17 caliber weapon

Fun little round, I still have one of the semi-autos in the safe. Most of the Semi's were recalled and the only one I know of now is the Alexander Arms one.

More expensive than some of the other bolt actions is the ones from CZ but dang they are very nice and shoot very well.
