300 ACC Blackout Subsonic Hunting

300 ACC Blackout Subsonic Hunting - 11/11/14 09:12 PM

I am using a Remington model 700, 300 blackout, bolt action, 16” barrel with Thunderbeast 30p-1 suppressor firing Remington 300 ACC blackout 220 grain subsonic. I have heard the following issues with subsonic ammo: 1) Bullet does not expand at subsonic velocity; 2) Bullet goes straight through the animal making it hard to track. Most of the discussions talked about vital shots (lungs, heart). What about head shot using subsonic 300 blackout? Has anyone done this to deer or pigs from 50 yards or less ? What about 100 yard ?

I have heard the following issues with subsonic ammo: 1) Bullet does not expand at subsonic velocity. CORRECT

2) Bullet goes straight through the animal making it hard to track. Depends. If you put a round right behind the shoulder of a deer, you will most likely get a full pass through, a .308" hole in and a .308" hole going out.

Most of the discussions talked about vital shots (lungs, heart). What about head shot using subsonic 300 blackout? Has anyone done this to deer or pigs from 50 yards or less ? What about 100 yard ? If you know your trajectory of the subsonic rounds, you can place your shots fairly accurately. Most effective hunters using subsonic ammo will be taking head and neck shots. I have heard many stories of lost animals due to not understanding what it is you are shooting. You are basically shooting a 45 ACP round in a rifle platform with a .308" bullet that does not expand. IMO, I don't use the subs for hunting. I treat them like golf, "You drive for show and putt for dough". Meaning you shoot the subs for show, and shoot supers for dough (for the 2x-3x the energy).

Shot two pigs with the Remington 220Gr. Very disappointed. Passed right through with very little damage.

Long story short, I had some buddies that I loaded a bunch of 208 A-max subs for them. They went pig hunting at night, and got into a mess of pigs. Once the shooting started, a big boar took off running and they all starting shooting the same pig. They dumped numerous rounds of 208's into him. He ran about 200 yards before piling up. Once they found him, they could see shiny spots on his side under the hair with their flash lights. The back end of the 208 was even with the skin sticking in the shoulder plate. He had taken numerous rounds, and several bullets only stuck in him just over an inch showing the back end of the bullet at skin level. This is why I don't hunt with the subs. It can be done, but shot placement is key.

No subsonic experience but I shot a mature buck at 125 yds with Hornady 110 gr vmax. The barrel is 16.5"" got a pass through and the deer ran 50 yds and went down. High lung shot so not much blood trail but a lot of internal damage.

I had a pass through shooting a buck with a 110g black tip Barnes VorTx. Gun is a 8.2" SBR with AAC SDN6 suppressor and a 100 yard shot. High lung and shoulder blade, very little blood trail. Went about 60 yards and dropped. Exit was larger.
Lehigh defense makes subs that do expand. They are pricey and I have not tried them yet.

If you want to hunt with subsonic rounds there are better calibers that the 300 Blk. Like others have said stick to supers for hunting with 30 caliber.
For those that want to hunt with subs the 458 Socom is a great choice. I use Remington 405 grain soft points at 1000 fps. The bullets are made for the 45/70 and designed to still expand at lower speeds plus it starts of with a big hole either way.

+++1! I have always wanted to build a 458 SOCOM for shooting those large 500+ grain bullets about 1050 fps!

May be I don't fully understand. So if I have a head shot that passes right through the brain with a 30 cal at 1000 fps, would the pig still run 50 yards? I would think it it would drop instantly. I saw some ballistic gel test on youtube and the penetration is pretty impresive.

The subs are dropping very fast, which makes accurate distance calculations VERY critical. My .308 subs drop 3 1/2 mils between 50yds and 100yds. That means if the distance estimating is off, say 15 yds. the POI is substantially different. What I mean by that, if I think the hog is at 100yds and he is really 115 yds away, that bullet is dropping fast enough to miss the small area I'm aiming for. As far as head shots, the angle and thickness of a hog's skull tend to deflect bullets.

^^Good post^^

458 Socom, shooting subs? Would a .45 ACP suppressor hold up? Are there suppressors specifically made for this big rifle round? I bet so, but I've never looked into it. Yall have me drooling over the thought of a 458 upper build.

You can head shoot a pig with a 40g .22LR bullet and drop it in its tracks. Same will be true for a pig and subsonic bullets. And if you are off a little, who cares? It's just a wild pig. There are millions more to kill.

^^^YUP^^^
I shoot Rem 220 subs in my 300blk and have dropped many pigs. I am sighted at 75 yards, so it is right on at 25 yards too, it works great from a tree stand.
You are going to have to shoot a lot to find out what it does. It is like archery, and as previously stated, distance is very critical.
It took me 7 shots to hit racoon from 250-300 yards (I never measured exactly). I almost didn't have enough scope to get him. The gun is so stable that you can stay on the scope after the shot and watch for where the bullets hits, I just kept shooting higher, and higher, and higher. I was at the bottom of the viewing area of the scope when the bullet finally struck him. That bullet was almost coming from the top down when it hit him (not really, but it was quite the arc I am sure), he was dead not far from where I hit him.
I would never do this except with varmints, and in hate raccoons at any cost.

You can hunt with subs, just keep within about 50 yards as your limited range, shoot for the ear hole on hogs, and neck shots on deer (I wouldn't shoot at deer with a sub, but that's me) and you shouldn't have an issue.
The longer the range you have to deal with the rainbow effect and you will have to know your range and where to hold.
I shoot heavy lead cast bullets in my sub loads.

IMO subs should be kept short range on game. Big bullets open big holes. Have had good results tith 44 special shooting subsonic from a handgun as well as 45 colt. Those 2 rounds over the years have killed lots of critters at subsonic velocities with lead bullets. One of the coolest suppressed junting rifles I have seen for hunting with subs is a Ruger m77-44 with the integral suppressed barrel.

The only 45 suppressors rated for 458 socom are the subgun cans. The Coastal MIMS and Bowers Versa are good to go, other 45 acp suppressors can not handle the increased volume of gas of the Socom. I ended up just up building my own rifle and integral suppressor using a savage action and McGowen 1:14 twist barrel.

I have a 45 MIMS suppressor sitting in the safe that I'd be willing to let you try with subs if you build an upper.
