300 win mag rebarrel

300 win mag rebarrel - 10/08/14 01:21 AM

So I am going to get my first nice bolt. I have a sps I am going to rebarrel.

Things I know...
Vortex 4-16 pst
Seekins dbm
Remington 700 action
Suppressed
Fluted barrel

Things I need recommendations
Which manners stock thinking eh-1
Barrel maker
Barrel contour
Barrel length. Thinking maybe 22 in barrel
Color- maybe have it atac fg

This is going to be my go to hunting gun. I am going to use it for deer mostly. I would like to go elk hunting and will use it for that. I am thinking about using the accubond lr 190 or 210. I am leaning towards 190 only because most hunting shots will be inside 300.

Heck yes on that choice of stock!

Good call on scope. I'd put it on an aluminum EGW pic rail base, and Talley Tactical aluminum rings. Both are well machined, strong, light and the rings make it super easy to remove and replace the scope if you ever need to for packing purposes. Although make sure you test that it returns to zero at the range well before the hunt.

Bartlein, Brux, Kreiger, Rock Creek, Obermeyer, which ever you can find in the twist rate and contour you want. Look at each maker's contour and decide how much weight you are willing to tote. In my opinion I want a hunting stock that will hold together for three shots before it starts stringing due to heat. I went with a "Light Palma" contour for my 7 Rem Mag and had it spiral fluted to cut about a pound of weight from it.

26" minimum length for a 300 Win Mag or 7 Rem Mag. You go shorter than that, and you lose the velocity that is the whole point of the long belted magnums.

Recent research has shown me that a 1:11" twist will run the 190 you mentioned all the way up to 225 gr. I will be helping a friend with load development for his 300 WM and I will be telling him that we are going to use a 210 gr. Berger. If you do happen to have a stable shot at 500 that pill is showing up with more than 2000 ft/ lbs. Any of the bullets you mentioned will be more than sufficient, though.

300 yards is not even a chip shot for this rig, it's a putt. But hey, if you want to be a grizzly bear this is America and you do as you please. smile

I really like that new manners eh1. I used to use the t4a but did not like the but hook so I switched to the T2a and I love it, but for a dedicated hunting rifle it is a little heavy even with the light weight fill.

Like fireman said any other big barrel makers will do, check out bugholes.com and see what he has in stock. Bartlein would be my first pick but brux is what I could get the next day so I went with it and it shoots great.

Color is total personal, I have been liking the gap style of camos though.

As for the contour and fluting I would look at the specs like fireman said and go with the heaviest that you want to tote.

Sounds like it is going to be an awesome rifle.

I know standard logic is 26in on 300. But 26+ can is going to be long...

What color pattern fireman?

I know this is overkill for deer. But I can hunt any game in North America almost up to 1k (assuming I get better) with this rig. And I love the 300 for some odd reason.

Re: 300 win mag rebarrel - 10/08/14 02:30 AM

I've done two in Manner's in "woodland camo" and I really like it.

The new "black forrest" camo looks pretty sexy too, though.

Look at Cerakote's website, thumb through the colors availble, narrow it down to a few, and have them send you samples. They will mail 2" x 2" pieces of aluminum that have the cerakote applied. Hold those up to the stock and see which one compliments the pattern of the stock the best. I would shy away from black on the metal though. It's hot, and the only black in nature is a skunk. Greens, browns, tans.

One (very good) option is to use Hart. They'll take your action and: chamber and rebarrel it with a new hart barrel (your choice of contour), square the action and lap the lugs for $700. I'd mention them in the same breath as Kreiger and Bartlein, but maybe someone feels differently about that.

Re: 300 win mag rebarrel - 10/08/14 03:32 PM

Cleric, I run a 27" Lilja 3 groove 1:10 twist on my custom 300WM and love it. I chose the NBRSA HV taper, so its a big heavy barrel. But, it shoots like a dream. I put 5 shots under a dime at 300 yds when I was confirming zero. I also shoot this beast suppressed, and it is hearing safe with my can, which I love.

As far as loads, I run the 208 amax over H1000 and it is a solid performer. So far I've only grouped at 600 yds, and I shot 3 shots that measured 2.34".

Looks like you have a pretty good build in the works, but I would definitely go with a longer barrel.

Derrick I know you do a lot with the 300. What do you recommend barrel wise?

I personally use Benchmark barrels that we contour and hand lap on about 95% of all the guns I build and you see how they shoot. I have done 300s as short as 22 and as long as 28. For a hunting gun I would do a 24 min, at about .685 min at the muzzle. Firemans right as you get short you lose the MV but I have done some 22 inchers with cans that shoot well. let me find a pic of the last one I did that was short in the 300 win

I like a long barrel also for 300 WM. Mine is 29". I'm pushing a 225 bthp at 2802 fps. I like the slower powders and faster speeds, if I can get it.

Re: 300 win mag rebarrel - 10/09/14 08:18 PM

So I think I will do a 26in barrel...

I am looking more at the game scouts. The big factor is if I can find a stock I like in stock.

Re: 300 win mag rebarrel - 10/09/14 08:28 PM

Barrel maker- Any custom, well known barrel mfg will work well. I prefer Bartlein, Brux, Kreiger, Obermeyer

Barrel contour- Depends on how light/heavy you want it. Since you will run it suppressed, I'd recommend no thinner than a #4 contour, maybe a #3.
Contours and weights: http://www.bartleinbarrels.com/contours.htm

Barrel length- For a hunting gun, I'd go no shorter than 24", but prefer 26". But a short win mag will have more muzzle blast and less speed. Plan for about 20-25 fps per inch gain/lose. I went 29" on my 300 WM, but it's designed for long range engagement with a heavy 225 grain bthp.

If you run a 190, I'd go 4831 or H1000. H1000 will yield a little more speed with the 190. My old load with a 190 SMK was with R22. R22 and a 190 grain is like peas and carrots! 3050 fps. I still load it and shoot it some. It's good!

Got my eh-1 in. Will send it back to manners to have them recontour. That stock feels amazing. It is astonishing the difference in feel

Re: 300 win mag rebarrel - 11/18/14 12:13 AM

Recontour what? The barrel channel?

If so you can make it clear perfectly parrallel in about 30 minutes instead of waiting on them.

Re: 300 win mag rebarrel - 11/18/14 12:36 AM

Yep I am going to have them open the barrel. It's a sporter now and I want something a bit bigger. For the amount they are charging I would rather have them do it

Re: 300 win mag rebarrel - 11/18/14 01:42 AM

Ok. I've ordered three stocks. Two Manners and one McMillan. I specified the exact barrel contour on every stock and on all three stocks I had to work on the barrel channel anyways. It's good to know how to do so you can get it free floated and get to shooting. Little bit of emory cloth and a bipod is all you need. No messing with the wait of shipping and the cost.

Re: 300 win mag rebarrel - 11/18/14 02:04 AM

He is going from sporter to sendero, trey will blank it out I will make sure it's floated when we do the build. They will cut it on the Cnc and they can make sure there is no chipping

Re: 300 win mag rebarrel - 12/04/14 04:51 AM

It he EH-1 stock is good, but I found it uncomfortable to carry, I like the McM game scout better if you want a vertical grip. I will say the vertical grip is good if you are shooting prone a lot, but not as advantageous, if you were shooting from regular hunting positions such as sitting, standing, or shooting off sticks. If you are making an elk rifle for high country make qit light, 26 in proof research barrel, Mc Millan game scout, and good quality optics ( nothing wrong with the vortex scope that you have specified-but I think there are better Out there) I like the Leupold VXIII 4.5x14 LR. I like the HS Precision bottom metal as the Seekins looks a little bulky to me, I like a stock with a green/brown/black swirl and FDE or coyote brown color on the metal--think that really looks cool. If you are punching paper build it the way you want it, if you hunt with it, build it as light as you can stand it ( if you just stand hunt, build it like you just punch paper!) If you have ever mountain hunted much you know the advantages of saving weight. I just turned 39, and I can tell you I cannot do things that I did when I was 25, and it's not getting any easier! I have hunted a lot, and I can tell you what you see on the long-range shooting TV shows, is not what it is in real life. Most of the shots are well within 300 yards. As much as I like shooting and practicing at long-range, Time is better spent getting a shot off in a timely manner. Have fun with your build, it is always fun to spec and plan a new gun. If I were building it I would seriously look at a 300 Weatherby Magnum, I have found it easy to load for and very forgiving, just never liked the short neck on a 300 Winchester Magnum--but hey there are no flies on it!
