Hunter Rifle Challenge 2015. Saturday January 24

Posted By: J.G.

Hunter Rifle Challenge 2015. Saturday January 24 - 10/03/14 10:39 PM

As soon as deer season is over (mid January) to March is no problem. I only have one thing sheduled with the wife one weekend in February right now. It may seem early to plan this , but I have to pick all of my vacation days for next year within the next three week.

Go!

Re: Hunter Rifle Challenge 2015. Lets figure out a date. - 10/03/14 10:50 PM

For those not familiar with this year. This was a rifle match designed for hunters to be able to show up with any centerfire rifle and put points on the board. No high capacity mag needed, no hot rod rifle needed, run what you hunt with. Mostly steel targets, a bit of paper, some clays to break, and a time limit on everything. We had some positional shooting and nothing was outside 300 yards. Well last year everyone had a great time and requested we keep most everything the same but also add some distance shots in the mix, so that is what we will do.

If it takes all day then we'll run until we're out of daylight.

Sounds like my kind of match! I'm in for anything except the first week of February and around March 17.

Dont get cocky, we're gonna have some stages a bit farther shots than last time.

Why run a Fiesta when you have a Mustang in the garage?

Haha yea I was joking that red dot wouldn't do too good on that dot drill or clays out that far. Banging steel wouldn't be a problem. Got that Luth-AR stock need to get out and shoot it.

Nah. The driver is more important than the rig. Bring it, as long as it has a MV less than 3100 fps.

Damn I wish I could come out. My boss is on a cruise all next week and if he isn't there I can't take off always gotta be an IT person there. It's a nice stock for sure, just like the PRS but no heavier than the acsl I had on it. Think I'm gonna love it the adjustablilty of the PRS with the weight of a collapsible stock up

Looks like y'all had a good time at last competition. Guess the competition is geared towards realistic hunting situations? Is it open to anyone? Definitely interested in participating!
Posted By: KRoyal

Re: Hunter Rifle Challenge 2015. Lets figure out a date. - 10/04/14 03:24 AM

Yep open to anyone shoot whatever you want as long as it doesn't go past 3100 fps so you don't hurt the steel. Got several different stages geared toward hunting really like the deer and coyote with the vitals being steel. Good stuff even though bobby blew the coyote up with his 300 wizzum haha.

I will try not to tear up any of the targets this time. aim

What is the round count needed? And so basically don't bring a 300RUM running 230 bergers at 2950 to not eat the steel.

This won't damage steel. You would probably need between 50-75 for the day

Thanks Dave.

cmorsch, I hope you can manage the recoil there will be positional shooting as well as unsupported, seated, kneeling, offhand. You, the rifle, and a sling only. If the rifle knocks you over I will ask if yoy need a Paramedic then I will laugh and point.

Lets get a good date knocked down so I can ask off now...

What about the weekend of the 17 in Jan if we do it on a Saturday, I think that would be a good date as it is the second or third weekend of the month.

Re: Hunter Rifle Challenge 2015. Lets figure out a date. - 10/04/14 02:44 PM

I just texted Chad that date. We'll see what he say.

I'm thinking of adding a "Test your limits" stage. To go with the "Know your limits".

KYL is one distance with progressively smaller targets. You hit you get points, you decide to move on. If you miss you zero the stage. Had four targets last time and lots of guys that hit three and missed the fourth. It always breaks hearts.

TYL will be starting at 200 and working out to 400 or 500 (don't expect everyone to run out to 800). Shoot till you miss, no loss of points.
Posted By: KRoyal

Re: Hunter Rifle Challenge 2015. Lets figure out a date. - 10/04/14 03:00 PM

Are we going to be able to dial elevation this time or it hold only? I like the TYL idea smile. KYL last time I stopped at 3 that 4th one was freakin tiny. Will we have the faris wheel again? That was probably my favorite stage shooting off hand sucked think I'll be removing my suppressor for that stage that heavy can on the end makes me wobble off hand lol.
Posted By: J.G.

Re: Hunter Rifle Challenge 2015. Lets figure out a date. - 10/04/14 03:04 PM

Dial or hold, your call.

Yes we will have the ferris wheel, it is too much fun not to have it! I have to repair it in the shop tomorrow and get it back out to the range. So I can shoot it every week grin

Haha no more than I did... Don't think I even hit anything until halfway through the match. Nerves + redbull + everyone watching me didn't work too well haha.

Re: Hunter Rifle Challenge 2015. Lets figure out a date. - 10/04/14 03:19 PM

Only way you'll embarass yourself is if you don't live up to your handle.

The reason I'm bringing this up so early is so we can more guys out that wanted to last time and this go-round wil be pre-pay only. That way when we have a list of shooters we know that many will show up. It's a full day of work or more, and the number of shooters coming matters when setting up everything.

Brither-in-law won it last time so yall watch out for him!

Re: Hunter Rifle Challenge 2015. Lets figure out a date. - 10/04/14 04:53 PM

Jan 24, let's do it! I want to have some of the same stages and a few new one's. I have some new ideas and a few extra pieces of steel.

But, you can count on one stage being there. 5 Dot Drill! 1 sheet of paper with 5, 1" dots on it, and 1 round per dot. I gave 30 seconds last time, and I was shocked at how few rounds scored. ((Hint Hint- so practice this one!!!) This time, maybe 40 seconds. That's 8 seconds per dot, or 10 seconds per dot if you shoot your first round at the start time.

And here's me shooting the Spinning Target shot at 300 yards (video says 200, but it was at 300). I was the first person to clean it after about 5 or 6 shooters trying it.

For those wondering if you can hang or feel intimidated just come on out and have fun. Here is some background of the last one and how luck plays out. My rifle got finished in October and due to a componets shortage the gun maker made me just enough bullets to get my gun sighted in by him and I then shot a few animals during hunting season. For the last hunters match I found enough componets for Chad to make 50 rounds just to play. The day of, I had a bad battery connection and broke down on the way to the match. Yep I was that guy that held everybody up. I got there and quickly had to go prove that my gun was sighted in (mandatory). I lined up and had to shoot prone, which I hate, and shot twice to show I could hit at 100 yards. All of the stages were pretty realistic of a hunting situation. All said and done I did alright single shot top loading with an 8lb gun and a Leupold 2x10 scope. I have never received an ounce of training nor had I even used a rear bag before this date. So I will say that anybody with a gun and a scope can play.

Agree It was a blast, being my first match, like a bunch there, I was intimated a little as well. But it is laid back and very fun. Anyone that has a rifle with a scope than can shoot to 200 yards or so will be able to compete just as well as others.

270 is fine.

This will be at my range west of Wolfe City, TX

Last time it was requested that we go a little farther. I'm thinking 500 yards, max, but not a bunch of stages that far. Heck I may even take a look in those duplex reticles and give guys a hold point, then let them have their rifle back. Don't want guys to fling lead for nothing.

Did you know I've killed coyotes at 500? And I wasn't tacticool about it. You hit 600 after the match I saw it happen. Don't be skeered!

Last time several guys asked for one or two stages that were farther out, so that is what we're doing. Most likely we will repeat most of the stages from last time and change up a couple.

It will if the driver knows how to push it pretty far. I'm sure you know how after visiting with you last week.

Limited to 3100fps eh? Dang, all my handloads are around 3250. Guess I'll have to get some box ammo for this one. I know my rifle will make it out to 800+. Not with me behind it, but it can do it! Watched a buddy who is a lot better shot than I am rip a prairie dog in half at 817. My best was 510. We'll see if I can duplicate it. Doubtful smile

Will one be at a big disadvantage if running a single feed rifle over a repeater? Oh and the 300 RUM has a JEC brake on it and is bloody loud.

FJG,

I run a match for a group of guys that hunt together to encourage them to practice, after they experienced one particularly bad outing which resulted in several wounded and lost animals.

The match is fondly called the Texas Warm Up match as the goal is to encourage practice before deer season, and because is in August. smile

Since we have been running the match for four years, every single person has made major upgrades in equipment, and now practices at least some during the year, based what they experienced in the practice match.

There has not been a lost animal since.

Glad you are making the effort to run this match. Hope everyone has fun and great results. up

Anyway with that background to the point a fwiw idea from the match I run - The first shot of the day is a true cold bore off of a 2x4 from a chair to simulate a deer blind.

About 50% make it and they others have a major reality check about the need for more practice.

We did one last year out of box blind with a deer at I believe 200 yards maybe it was 175, but the heart/lung section of the deer was steel plat and the rest was plywood. Wasn't a cold bore shot, but was pretty realistic only thing was missing was the feeder standing over the deer bolt. Also I don't think cold bore shots will work because at the beginning of the class it is mandatory confirm zero.

If you go to the score board picture on the first page, the stage was called "Deer Blind". A first round hit was 2 points and second round hit was 1 point. Most hit it. 6 out of 9 made a first round hit. It was a 200 yard shot with a vital area of about 6" or 8" steel plate.

Chad and I shot all the stages last time. We timed ourselves, were fairly even, then we added about 50% more time to what it took us to get it shot. We didn't want the time to crunch everyone too bad and I don't remember anyone timing out.

The prairie dogs gave some guys trouble. Size of target, distance, and time limit was about right. If you dialed you were gonna run out of time. We have some thinking stages and I like that.

Having that 1" group where you want it is completely different wink

I went to a match in Greenville before I bought my 6slr to see if it was something that I wanted to get into. I knew I was in a whole different world when the 1st stage was shooting 3" dots at 100y and the best score was 3 of 6. Had to shoot 3 standing and 3 kneeling (with sling) in less than 90 seconds. I shoot 2" clays @ 400y so it was a rude awakening.

Yall can count on Chad's 1" x 5 dot drill being part of the match again. I always rather shoot steel, but sometimes we have to throw some paper in there.

Chad, isn't this timed? When I practice I don't shoot fast so that definitely changes things quite a bit and then to perform in competition where you have everyone watching...turns up the heat quite a bit on most of us.

More I think about that...hum...the more I want to participate!
Posted By: J.G.

Re: Hunter Rifle Challenge 2015. Saturday January 24 - 10/08/14 01:10 PM

Everything is timed. That gets in guys head, worrying about the clock. It's happened to me many times. I learned from awesome shooters to forget the clock and make every shot as well as you can. Tis better to shoot three bullets, and get three hits and run out of time than to shoot five bullets, hit one, and have time left on the clock.

We're very generous with par times compared to precision matches. At those they'll make par times so short that is impossible to get all your shots off on some stages. That's nothing more than a way to mind screw competitors.

Oh yes, totally! I gave 45 seconds last time, I just looked it up. I'll probably give that same time, or maybe a little more.

Anytime you have a timed event, you still have to get points on the board. So, I can only shoot so fast and score points. So, I make each shot count. I would rather get off 3 perfectly aimed shots and score 3 points, instead of 5 rushed shots and score 1 or 2 points. So, shoot as fast as you can accurately make shots. BTW, in most comps, they give you about 20 seconds for most 5 dot drills. I usually have a few seconds left over. But I fire my first shot on the start buzzer, which means you technically have 4 rounds in 20 seconds, which is almost 5 seconds per dot. That's a lot of time, honestly.

Re: Hunter Rifle Challenge 2015. Saturday January 24 - 10/08/14 01:18 PM

I think this was asked but...can you bring two rifles to shoot or just one? There's no way I'll be able to shoot my 6.5 CM off hand, it's just too heavy, north of 17lbs. So I'd like to bring a different rifle for those shots. I like the idea of a bolt .223 cuz I have one, beautiful Remington 700 BDL. It's one of the older ones before Remington got screwed up! I'd need to do some load work up on it but that's not a problem.
Posted By: ChadTRG42

Re: Hunter Rifle Challenge 2015. Saturday January 24 - 10/08/14 01:20 PM

90-95% of the shots will be 300 yards and less. You will be shooting some from the bench, some from a chair, some from a deer blind, some off a T-post. It is a mix of stages. We will pull a lot of the fun stages from actual shooting comps and apply them to a hunting situation.

Re: Hunter Rifle Challenge 2015. Saturday January 24 - 10/08/14 01:22 PM

A 223 would be great for the match. The only issue you will have is the Texas Spinning Target stage. The 223 won't have enough umpfff to spin the target around. I hit it five times with my 300 blk out shooting 125 supers last time, and it's not enough umpff either.

Yea, last time the time got in my head and I shot really fast on some of the stages. It would feel like I was on my rifle for an eternity, but after I fired all my shots Jason, Chad, or Dave would tell me to slow down I still had a ton of time left on the clock. To me it felt like I was getting down to the last seconds, but almost ever stage I shot I still have the majority of time still on the clock.

True hunting rifles or 16lb tactical, prone guns? Weight limit on rifle? I guess you could drag a heavy gun into a blind...

These stages should be timed and number of stages might need to be limited. If as many shooters show up who are committing here it would be a 3 day shoot. Will be dark at 6:00pm. Could go thermal but I thinks Thermal is against the law for hunting deer.

100 rounds per shooter could take a VERY long time.

Lots of time to hammer out the rules and technical stuff. I'll stay tuned and start reloading

Re: Hunter Rifle Challenge 2015. Saturday January 24 - 10/09/14 02:20 AM

I have, and do, hunt with a 15 pound rifle. Most guys will show up with an internal box magazine and a duplex reticle.

ALL stages are under a par time.

Last match was 50 rounds per shooter. I let guys ping far steel once the match was done.

I told Chad today, we will need to run two stages simultaneously all day.

Chad and I have probably shot 100 matches, combined, have ran this one once. KRoyal is right guys have to put their money where their mouth is before we plan on the REAL number of shooters. That's why I brought this up prior to deer season, scheduled for after deer season, and we'll begin the registration and payment very soon. This time around will be prepayment only. No paying the day of. We will know the maximum amount of shooters the range can handle and will do all we can to run an efficcient match.

In short, we got this.

There was a bunch of different rifles there last year but the gun doesn't really matter it is the guy shooting it. Like fireman I also hunt with a heavy match style rifle. It is what I have so I use it. I have really changed my attitude about guns the last few years and sold all but three of my rifles one is a lever action that I keep at my cabin as a throw around gun. One is my graduation present from my dad that is waiting for a new scope and the other is a full custom build rifle. I chose to go with quality of quantity and it has worked so far. So that is what I use.

^^^^ Yes, Yes, and Yes!!! I will hopefully have registration active in the next day or two. I am thinking we will allow about 30-35 shooters. We want it to go smooth without much down time, and be able to confirm zero before the match. Last time we started zeroing at 8 am, and were shooting by 9 am. With 10-12 shooters, we were done by 1 pm, and started drinking a beer and eating lunch. It was a fun day! I enjoyed meeting everyone and it was good to hang out afterwards.

I'll bet there are more heavy tac rifles than normal hunting weight rifles that show up. Y'all quit worrying about how much your rifle weighs and show up. You will only be carrying or holding your rifle when you are batting or on deck.

You will park about 75-100 yards from the main firing line, or the raised platform. The range is 800 yards long. We will begin the match shooting from about the ~600 yard line at targets set at the 800 yard line. So, you will walk from your car to the firing line (about 100 yards), and then out to 600 yards, then work your way back at various shooting stages. That will be the extent of the walking. There will be some UTV and some range trucks I'm sure going down range. I knew a few shooters let their gear hitch a ride on some of the vehicles.

Speed tears up armor steel, not energy. Armor steel is hard to come by and expensive. Not interested in replacing steel that was damaged due to high velocity rounds. Speed don't win, anyway, straight shooting does. grin

Chad's right. We're capping it at 30. Once we get 30 if you didnt get in you waited too long.

You need a centerfire rifle with a scope and a three or four round mag. No reason not to shoot the match.

Buzzsaw, we'll be glad to have you.

Re: Hunter Rifle Challenge 2015. Lets figure out a date. - 10/26/14 04:00 PM

What are the target sizes and distances?

Is it hit/miss, or knock over the steels?

Are bipods and shooting sticks allowed?
Posted By: J.G.

Re: Hunter Rifle Challenge 2015. Lets figure out a date. - 10/26/14 06:22 PM

Target sizes are very generous on most stages. Nothing under 2 MOA.

Hit or miss. Hit equals points miss is zero. Except one stage. If you miss one of the targets in the string, you lose all accumulated points.

Bipods are allowed. One stage has a Bog-Pod and that is provided.

Re: Hunter Rifle Challenge 2015. Lets figure out a date. - 12/29/14 08:57 PM

Well CRAP!!! Murphy seems to be strong with me lately...

I may have to forfeit on the challenge, depending on how long it will take Vortex to get my scope back to me and me to find time to get it re-mounted and sighted in.

Just noticed a blurry spot inside the scope, just barely above center line. Thought one of my lenses was dirty, cleaned both the Ocular and Objective lenses to no avail... I'm assuming it's grease or something that worked it's way loose and deposited itself on one of the internal lenses...

I just got off the phone with Vortex and they stated normal turn-around is 7-10 business days but they are "running a little behind" right now. On the plus side, the Vortex rep was very pleasant to speak with, so there is that...

Here is hoping for a quick turn-around and me being able to get some time to go sight it in... Not that I had any hopes of actually placing in the competition anyway....

What rifle is this going on? I have a Vortex scope you can use if needed. Just let me know.

Re: Hunter Rifle Challenge 2015. Lets figure out a date. - 12/30/14 12:25 AM

It's worse than I thought!!! 1 large spot in center and several smaller spots around the edge!!! That's with it on 6.5 power. Imagine how blurry the image is at 20X...

Man, come shoot!

Especially if you have a one piece pic rail we can loan you a scope in the rings. Rezero it and off you go. Especially if you're already using Mils.

Re: Hunter Rifle Challenge 2015. Lets figure out a date. - 12/30/14 02:29 AM

If you let FiremanJG shoot your rifle he will mount the scope and sight it in for you grin

I too have a scope you can borrow (SWFA SS 3-15) if you like. Come on out and shoot.

Re: Hunter Rifle Challenge 2015. Lets figure out a date. - 12/30/14 03:30 AM

It does indeed have a 1 piece picatinny base.
I'm overwhelmed with gratitude at the generosity of the fellow members offering to let me borrow a scope.

If someone has a 30mm scope in the 20x range with mil-dot reticle they are willing to lend me for the shoot, assuming Vortex doesn't have my scope back in time, then I will show up with my rifle and be happy to embarrass myself with everyone.

Will there be a chrony to verify velocity along with sight in prior to the shoot?

Nothing is over 300 yards.

What is your ammo or hand load? I can give you DOPE, to 400, without a chronograph.

Re: Hunter Rifle Challenge 2015. Lets figure out a date. - 12/30/14 01:22 PM

Oh, only 300. For some reason I also thought we were shooting to 500+...

I'll be shooting .308 168gr Fed. GMM ammo out of 18" barrel.
Haven't had any time to do load development for my 178amax or 175smk...

How much ammo do we need to bring?

Re: Hunter Rifle Challenge 2015. Lets figure out a date. - 12/30/14 02:47 PM

100 yard zero, G1 BC .462, MV of 2500 fps

150 yards .2 Mil
200 yards .6
250 yards 1.0
300 yards 1.5
350 yards 2.0
400 yards 2.6
450 yards 3.2
500 yards 3.8
550 yards 4.5
600 yards 5.2
650 yards 6.0
700 yards 6.9
750 yards 7.8
800 yards 8.7

This is calculated. KRoyal ran Chad's 168 gr. SMK bulk ammo in my class. He should have DOPE that I recorded for him that day. Hopefully he can confirm or deny if this is going to work for you. It will probably be close enough for the match to 300 yards, and the targets aren't all that small. But iffin you wanted to shoot in the side pot after the match, it'll go to 800 yards grin

Chicken!

Not all thirty will feel like getting in on that little side match. I bet ten, at most. And R.O.s will have to be talleying scores and R.O-ing that match. And that's after targets are repositioned after the main match.

Post directions when you can.

How far in hours from Frisco?

What should time frame be? RE; first shots downrange, till finish.

Don't know if I will drive home after or drink beer and stay at BIL's in Bonham.

.223 bolt gun, 500yd could be fun.....

SH 121 north east to Bonham
East of SH 11, pass through the intersection of SH 11 and SH 78
In 2.5 miles turn south onto Fannin CR 3830
3830 turns back to the east, go right onto CR 3835, you'll be headed southbound
Stay on CR 3835, and cross over the intersection of CR 3805
Range is 1/4 mile further south on the east side of CR 3835
Big Ole entryway that says Garvey on top, you can't miss it!

Probably 1 hour 20 minutes from Frisco

Arrive at 0800, check in, zero at 100 yards (mandatory), hope to be going hot at 0900. Should be done around Noon or 1. My place is a 20 minute drive from downtown Bonham.

I taught a student in September shooting a .223 to 500 yards. It'll get it done if you know your stuff. But the match is only to 300 yards. The side pot is out to 800 yards.

If you come with a properly zero'd weapon, you will do well. I can't tell you how many shooters had rifles shooting off their zero.

There WILL be the 5 dot drill at 100 yards! 5 dots, 1 inch in size, 1 round per dot, 45 seconds to shoot it.

Chad told me we are at 24. We have room for 6 more shooters. Anyone that registers from here on will not be getting a T-shirt.

Yall pray for no rain between now and then. It's already extremely muddy. Was supposed to get gravel brought in three weeks ago and it hasn't dried up enough to get it done yet. bang

BIL is blowin smoke. He'll show up with a 6.5 Creedmoor shooting tight ammo, a good scope, and the whole rig weighs less than ten pounds. Oh, and he's 6'3"-ish and 250+. I'm gonna make him shoot it one handed.

Go for it!

Maneuverability is a big part of it. We will have some small targets a decent distance away, FYI. Nothing will be over 300 yards, though.
Posted By: Precision_Shooter

Re: Hunter Rifle Challenge 2015. Lets figure out a date. - 01/12/15 07:13 PM

Since my scope is not back from Vortex yet, I'm going to shoot the CZ 527 and my Tikka T3 this weekend and decide which I want to shoot at the match...

Neither have a scope with a reticle to allow for accurate holds. The CZ's scope VXR will allow for dialing, but I suck at dialing distance and windage... The Tikka has an old VX1 4-12x40 which has the friction, not click, adjustments. It's a true set it and forget it scope...

If its a duplex you can measure the distance at 100 yards from the center to where the post gets heavier. Turn that into MOA or Mil then use it for your holds.

Haha good times on the black mud roads. I went to Vernon's shop before I came to Jason's for his class. Vernon says oh yea about 1 mile as the crow flys that way. Just head down that road and you'll run right into the road Jason's range is on. Lol Think I drove through a field over 2 small bridges I didn't even know if they were safe and had my pretty white truck covered in Fanin county black sludge. This was in a 2WD and didn't have any problems. I think you should try it in the Honda BIL.

Even with 4x4 try it in a truck with bald street tires....

As much as it has been raining and knowing what it looked like dry...I'm not so sure 4wd would get down it. It's a nasty road.

4wd in a diesel brings them to the gas 2wd stage...man that heavy front in will sink a freaking diesel in the mud. After I got stuck once (way easier than I thought it should've) if there was water laying on it I wasn't going through it. I love the trucks...but they do get hung up easier than gas.

.223 bolt gun, 500yd could be fun.....

You are right Judd, weather is weird. I've always been a weather watcher. I was looking at the 10 day forecast. Hope for a good day so we can all get around the range.

You sound like me when wanting to test loads, I always pray for calm winds. I have access to a 100 yard indoor range but the benches are close together, and I can't use a chronograph which defeats the point of developing loads...

AH !!! an excuse to buy the Magneto !!! partyon555

When I'm tuning I want to eliminate any varible that will open up the groups. Once I have a tuned load I'm all for shooting in the wind. I might go tomorrow and just throw out some flags. JG...You would laugh your donkey off at my flag setup, just because I'm sure I'm breaking 1215 tactical rules and violating 15 man laws rofl

Buzzsaw...I'm not on the magneto train yet. I know just enough about tuners to realize any little thing you do to change the harmonics of that barrel will change the tune. Therefore, I'm not strapping anything to my barrel during load tuning. I do think as a validation of loads it would be a great tool though. I don't always use a chrono in my tuning but will more than I won't. I really want low es/sd's....if I can find that combination I can normally mess with it enough to get it to shoot.

Re: Hunter Rifle Challenge 2015. Lets figure out a date. - 01/16/15 10:30 PM

Judd, I agree, I spent a couple years trying to master .22 rimfire benchrest. Damn, it was all about a $1000 rest, tuning the barrel tuner to the right ammo, all the shooter did was "touch" the trigger.
Not my cup o tea.

On the wind flags, I have to agree with JG, I don't mind one half way down range and on the target line, mostly for shooting the 300-600yd mid range and 800-1000yd long range F-Class matches.

The rim-fire benchrest wind flags make the range look like a miniature golf course or a Mexican grave yard.. flag

Pretty sure Brother In Law, the guy that won last year, was using a regular rifle with regular scope.

I don't shoot bolt actions, so all my guns are gas guns which are inherently more expensive than bolt guns off the shelves. Otherwise id be shooting a semi custom off the shelf 308 with chads bulk ammo he sells. I shoot a $299 SWFA scope and was hitting 800 yard steel with Jason no problem.

You have never heard of the 243, what kind of hunter is that.... The gun has less to do with who wins than the guy pulling the trigger. Ask me how I know that from last years match. The gun also weighs close to 12 pounds. How does that give me an advantage shooting standing kneeling or any other unsupported position? Would you rather me not shoot because my only rifle doesn't fit you idea of " normal " or whatever the hell that is.

Not bragging but I won last year, Here are some facts for you to chew on:

I was 1 hour late and shot 2 rounds to check my 0
My rifle weighs 8 lbs , 21" #3 barrel ,with a 2x10 duplex reticle scope
I had never shot a scoped rifle prone before that day
I had never used a rear bag before, I had to borrow a couple that day
I had never competed
I shoot less than 60 rifle rounds a year
I top loaded and shot single shot the whole event

So you don't need a fancy rifle. Second place used a stock savage 308

There will be hunting rifles there just like last year. Mine will be a Savage bolt action 7mm08, 24" sporter barrel, factory trigger. Unless you are registered to compete that weekend lay off the negative comments about what kind of firearms people hunt with.

Re: Hunter Rifle Challenge 2015. Saturday January 24 - 01/18/15 07:33 AM

I'll be using a Ruger M77 Mk.II in 6.5x55mm Swedish Mauser with a Leupold 3-9x40mm VXII. Only two things "custom" about it is the Timney trigger (which is a must with almost all Mk. II M77s) and its in a Boyd's laminate stock.

The gun isn't near as important as the shooter. Just like any other sport: you can have the best equipment, but without skill its useless.

I would like to apologize for the use of the word "normal" I should have used "standard" ....In the first posted pictures all I noticed was tactical rifles...and yes this is the first time I have ever been on a forum...yes I know what a 243 is my Dad bought one when they came out it became my first hunting rifle..jgfireman thanks for developing a hunting style match I sorry I will be out on the rig working that weekend..Maybe next time but looks like Ill have to change my name first..Jack

Well done.

You learned the hard way about being the new guy and start off by criticizing something. This match is designed for a guy with an average rifle and scope to do well. It will come down to who shoots more and who prepares more. Duplex, Mils, MOA, mass produced or custom, he who shoots most will do best.

Re: Hunter Rifle Challenge 2015. Saturday January 24 - 01/18/15 08:28 PM

What should we have/need? Are these legal, trying to figure out what to bring beside rifle/ammo/eyes and ears:

Bipod attached to rifle
shooting sticks, re; Bog-Pod
rear bag
shooting matt
range finder
bino's
back pack to shoot off of

What else? Missing anything?
Posted By: KRoyal

Re: Hunter Rifle Challenge 2015. Saturday January 24 - 01/18/15 08:40 PM

You won't need range finder for sure and binos if you just want to watch people shoot but you won't need them. Don't know about shooting sticks most all the stages have a specific platform to shoot off of. You can bring a backpack to shoot off of but probably won't need it.

I'll be bringing rifle, ammo, eyes, and ears. Back pack to carry ammo, rear bag, and odds&ends
Posted By: Brother in-law

Re: Hunter Rifle Challenge 2015. Saturday January 24 - 01/18/15 08:49 PM

You wont need a rangefinder
Binoculars only for fun, guys will be spotting
Shooting mat maybe
Drinks, lunch , snacks, light weight stool or chair
Lots of standing and you will be out in the wide open
Posted By: Wburke2010

Re: Hunter Rifle Challenge 2015. Saturday January 24 - 01/18/15 08:54 PM

I will be bringing a cooler with a bunch of drinks for everyone. So don't bring drinks as there will be plenty.

I am bringing.

Rifle
Ammo
Rear bags
Shooting may
Tripod with rest

And some other odds and ends.

Defiantly bring snacks.

No. I have one you can use if needed.

All you HAVE to bring is rifle, ammo, eye and ear protection, lunch, a good attitude, a safe disposition, and beer for afterward if you are so inclined.

A portable chair or seat is good. You will walk about 600 yards from firing line down to the 600 yard berm for the morning stages shooting up to 200 yards (shoot from 600 berm towards 800 yard berm). Once these stages are complete, we will walk back another 200 yards, and shoot a few stages. Then move back to the zero line and finish the match there. So, you will walk 600 yards initially, and slowly move back.

Preciate yall's help.

22-250 will tear up my steel. 3100 fps, or less.

A .223 will work for all but one stage, where you need some foot pounds. Even then, you can get points, just not max points since the round won't have enough ooomph to get it done. You'll see.

My wife isn't going to shoot tomorrow due to being sick. If it's ok with Chad and JG I'll sell her spot to somebody that wants to shoot for whatever the entry price was. Let me know if this is ok

I would, but I don't do good with needy people, and my wife when she is sick she is needy. I have no fatherly traits, I don't like it when people whine and moan. So she's staying home. I on the other hand will be there bright and early and hoping that my rifle will hit the bullseye for the 100 yard qual smirk

Mud never hurt no one. Mud boots and some old pants and I think we will live through it. I have my go pro setup on my rifle stock and brought two more for the batteries so I am going to try and film every stage and then make a video out of it so we will see how it goes.

Lol let's just say I didn't do too hot......... Tied for 18th out of 23 shooters. Couple of them were me trying to compensate my dope for the cold weather in which it didn't need to be compensated for. Once I finally quit screwing myself and got dialed in but by then it was just too late to catch up. Not gonna blame it all on that I messed up a couple times just stupid mistakes. 2 different occasions I only loaded 3 rounds instead of 4. One of the stages it worked out I hit everything with 3 rounds. Other stage was just a wreck from the beginning I started on the wrong prairie dog and only loaded 3 rounds so I was just jinxed on it from the start. Don't ask me about know your limits stage. I was the only one that missed the first target. Lol everyone got a good laugh from that I just sat there slack jawed in disbelief I missed it.

That aside I had a great time meeting everyone and it's always fun when shoot stuff. Prize table this year was awesome thanks to all the sponsors and thanks to Jason and Chad for the time they put in and the RO's for donating their time today. Already planning for next year lol.

Re: Hunter Rifle Challenge 2015. Lets figure out a date. - 01/25/15 01:52 AM

Here is one video, this is a go pro on the top of my scope.

This was the barricade stage. Three rounds from three different positions. Basically standing, kneeling, and seating. I believe it was shot at 200 hundred yards. I hit all three shots on this one. The videos are not that great with the go pro since it is so wide of an angle.

Also whoever got the slo mo video of me shooting I would love to have a copy of it thanks.

I can't believe BIL didn't win. Didn't seemed like he ever missed. I wasn't in the group with James and Andrew though. They must have cleaned pretty much everything.

On thing I would like to change is the pig stage. 8 point lead off the first stage is a big deficit to make up if you miss and they hit both shots standing.

KRoyal, you weren't the only one that missed the first target on the know your limits, I did as well... Forgot to dial back and missed low...

It was a great day and a hell of a lot of fun! I'm in for the next one and the next one etc...

Jason and Chad, hell of a good job setting this up and managing the course of fire! Met some new people and made some new friendships! Can't thank Yall enough for the hard work that went into this. Also, thanks to all the sponsors for the great prizes!

This was the first match I have ever been to, and the first time I've really ever shot past 100yds. I surprised myself on some stages and disappointed myself on others. Finished 14th out of 23 shooters, but had a lot of fun doing it!

When's the next match?

I'm WORE OUT!!! I'm feelin all 62 years.... But as Jason stated above, I'd do it all over again tomorrow !!!

I think this was the best day of shooting I have ever had and I've had a bunch of them.

Jason's place is freekin awesome, He and Chad worked very hard pulling this thing off.

the weather was perfect

Whoever donated the 18 year old Glenfiddich to the prize table....THANK YOU !!! I will spin the top next Sunday.

Great putting faces to the manes we see hear daily, I agree next year we need name badges.

One last thing, going first on "Know Your Limits" sucks...and next match I will ONLY take 3 rounds to the line...... hammer

I had a great time, sore as heck from a sun burn right now and tired as all get out, but I've got a big bowl of Cookies 'n Cream to fix those problems. Good meeting everybody today. Hope to be able to continue this maybe have another match soon!

What else can be said that hasn't been said already, just a great time with a bunch of good guys. Did not hear any negative comments at all especially having to fight the mud. I believe it was a huge success with those that came last year and all of the first timers. Chad, Jason and the RO's did a great job putting this on. And for the sponsors, a big thank you too.

Re: Hunter Rifle Challenge 2015. Lets figure out a date. - 01/25/15 02:27 PM

Unfortunately, because of Jason and chad I now have to divorce the woman and leave her. And it's not because she beat me, but because she totally spanked me! At least we had a good few years.

Haha! We had a fan-flipping-tastic time yesterday. Nice to put faces to names and the course was fun. Can't wait for the next one. I'll try and bring my dignity and shooting skills next time.

Would it be possible to post the scores with just the shooter's numbers?

Very nice!!! I like the videos!!

"Chad sounding like an angry bear!"- LOL!! Once I didn't call exactly where some shooters were hitting, I couldn't start calling for the next shooters. But I saw all day that guys would shoot a freakin' clover leaf group, but just off target. On this stage, you could tell where Walter was shooting on the big clay, and with the correct correction, the little clay would be hit. And he did it!!

I really had a blast doing this match. I enjoy seeing everyone and watching everyone do the stages. We will do it again!!

Great that everyone had a good time. Sounds like the course was designed for younger fellows. No way I could walk that much in the mud and then get down and get back up. Too bad you aren't having it today, or a second round---nice wind outside and gusting hard.

Sounds like someone needs to get busy on their new water well so they can flood several of the shooting positions next year (next time).
Posted By: Judd

Re: Hunter Rifle Challenge 2015. Lets figure out a date. - 01/25/15 06:53 PM

I wouldn't say it was designed for the young folks. As Buzzsaw mentioned he is 62 and did a great job. There were side by sides on site had anyone said they couldn't or didn't want to do the mud walk could've gotten a ride. wink

Great shooting but MR2 shot a 300 win mag and someone else shot a 7 mag...those guys are bad donkey's, hats off to y'all because I couldn't have done it. Oh and Korean Redneck...lucky #4 was awesome wink

I had a great time helping Jason & Chad and enjoyed meeting a lot of folks from here that I didn't know before but seem to always be talking to them here.

Oh and KRoyal...that stuff happens to everyone if they shoot enough. On more than one occasion I've shot the wrong target. You would think that I'd learn after one time but I can't explain it but it happens. bang

Thanks for all the nice words but im not that tough, just dumb enough to shoot enough and not feel it anymore. At the end of the day i only placed 16/23 but had a great time plinking some targets. First time really shooting past 100 yds so I was totally happy with the hits I got. If anyone is hesitant about the next challenge, don't be; more fun and meeting people than anything else.

I agree 100%, I hadn't shot but maybe 10 rounds past 100 yards in my life with the furthest being 200. It was a great time for sure and look forward to the next one. I do agree we needed name tags though haha.

I used an 18" barrel Savage in .308 with a brake. Factory plastic stock with Vortex Viper scope, bipod, and sling.

All but 2 or 3 had bipods and slings attached to their rifles.

We tried to gear this match to the hunting rifle. That's why we had the off hand stages and pig stage where you can choose your shooting position, and get more points for standing and kneeling, over prone. BIL went standing and got 2 hits for 8 points, which was the highest you could get.

Re: Hunter Rifle Challenge 2015. Lets figure out a date. - 01/27/15 01:10 AM

KYL has a habit of really changing the ranking in a match. Especially one with only 12 stages. It gets in everyone's head. You think of laying up and quitting while you're ahead, then you think of gaining way more points and looking like the bad a$$ that got that last target. Been there, done that, will probably do it again.
Posted By: Wburke2010

Re: Hunter Rifle Challenge 2015. Lets figure out a date. - 01/27/15 01:13 AM

KYL was the deciding stage for sure. I think first through eight was decided by 10 points. With a few people one point apart.

I'm going to need more power than my 3-9x40 Leupold. Also need one that has target turrets and mils or something similar. My little 6.5 Swede can do her part but I think the optics held her back some.

Also, I think some guys not having a good sling (and knowing how to use it) hurt some on the standing shots. I used my USGI cotton web sling from my Garand and it helped a bunch. I think my CMP Garand matches helped me hit that pig from standing!

I never adjusted scope x higher than 8x the whole day. What's a sling?

Young Eagle Eye BIL.
What scope did you put on the rifle you had built? The one with the Dreamcicle stock.

You did pretty darn good on the standing stages.

Re: Hunter Rifle Challenge 2015. Lets figure out a date. - 01/28/15 02:46 PM

If I could make a simple observation on what I saw. There were really 3 main things I saw that shooters were doing that needs improvement.

The first thing (and main thing) I noticed was most shooters come totally off their rifle after the shot. When you fire and come off your rifle (lose cheek weld and butt of rifle comes off shoulder), you have to reposition back on the rifle which takes more time. It also can change up the recoil impulse and/or poi due to not getting back on the rifle in the same spot you were in. Plus, shooters were trying to cycle the bolt off the rifle. If you stay on the rifle, you can use your cheek as leverage to hold the rifle in place and cycle the bolt, while staying on the gun. Many shooters come off the rifle, back up, take their left hand and hold the stock, and cycle the bolt with their right hand to chamber another round. Also, most would have to take more time to find the target again b/c they lost it from getting out of position. Stay on the rifle!

Second, was jumping the trigger. Many shooters would shoot, and their trigger finger would bounce off the trigger as the shot broke. The proper way is to have a straight 90 degree pull to the trigger and press the trigger to the rear throughout the duration of recoil. This is called follow through. You have to have good follow through for accurate shooting.

Third, at the start of a stage, shooters shoulder their rifle and would try to find the target only through the scope. Most of the stages we started out of position where you had to shoulder the rifle and find the target. Often times, shooters would get on the glass, and try to find the target only when looking through the scope, and would end up looking totally in the wrong direction. Raise your head up and look over the top of the scope and line up the rifle first, then get into the scope. There were many shooters that ran out of time b/c they stayed looking through the scope and didn't line the rifle up on target first. Line the rifle up on target by looking over the top of the scope first, then get into the scope and on target.

Hope this helps!

I definitely learned I need to work on trigger control and not slap the trigger.

Thanks for the suggestions chad, I know Garvey and Judd were talking about me slapping the trigger too.

Now, if you don't mind I would like to address the only let down I had during the entire day from you and your spotting, which was a severe lack of enthusiasm. We needed a lot more out of you. Might want to take notes from Judd sometime to help yourself come out of your shell a little bit

Shooting a shotgun a lot sort of fights the whole trigger control thing...one of the reasons I don't shoot it near like I did.

I need to slow down when shooting, I get the clock in my head and start to rush, especially when there are 4 or 5 shots in 60seconds. Seems like the last few shots are always rushed

I did this but opposite. I rushed the first shot or two, and then realized I had plenty of time for the next few shots...

Exactly!! We do the time for 2 reasons. It helps to schedule the match time so we don't run long. But mostly, it adds a little stress, or "buck fever" to the shooting. The 1 minute par time we had for most stages is PLENTY to make all your shots. But look at it this way. I'd rather have 3-4 well aimed shots that score rather than 5 shots rushed and off target. So, take your time and make your hits count. But, there was plenty of time on all the stages to get all your shots off if you shot the stage correctly. On our 5 dot drill, we normally have 20 seconds in competitions to do it. But think about it. You start on the rifle ready to fire. If you are ready to when the buzzer starts and fire your first round, you basically have 4 shots in just under 20 seconds, so roughly 1 shot per 5 seconds. Honestly, that's a lot of time. So a minute for 5 rounds is a lot.

Also, something to think about. I saw there were a lot of stock factory rifles shooting with a bi-pod. I would recommend testing your rifle with and without a bi-pod. Shoot some groups with 4 or 5 rounds (more than 3 rounds) each way on and off. You may find that the rifle shoots better with the bi-pod off and resting on a backpack or bags. I personally will not do a load work up on an unbedded, factory rifle with a bi-pod. The bi-pod causes the stock to flex and put stress on the mating of the stock and action. The bi-pod can easily throw your shots off and open up your groups. Just something to think about!

Truth! During a week long shooting class I was using a factory savage accustock. It hated a bipod, but loved the bag. It was replaced with a HS-Precisin stock and now all is well, but now I like bags more

Get behind a 7 Rem Mag or a 300 Win Mag and you'll be wishing you had your bipod back.Especially on the deck or bench. There is angle iron at the end so you can load the bipod. Front bags make you feel more of the recoil because you can't load.

I told Judd and Chad the trigger control (or lack of) was driving me nuts! Heck I saw some guys with daylight between their finger and the trigger. I wasnt even looking down range most of the time. I'd see a trigger get slaped and think "theres a miss", sure enough Judd wouldnt call impact. Chad and I talked about this about 3/4 of the way through the match. And both of us had the same thoughts on the matter. Let em shoot, critique later.

I've seen PRS shooters break their cheek weld to cycle a rifle. They want to watch the cartridge go into the chamber. Why? You'll feel if it picked up a cartridge or not. Let the machine do its job. If it didnt pick up a cartridge then deal with it. Until then MAINTAIN CHEEK WELD!!! grin

I had mentioned something similar during the match. The few guys not using bi-pods, including the guy with the 300WM, were at a disadvantage on the Farris Wheel stage where you need to maintain cheek weld, cycle the bolt, keep the rifle on target, and get that next shot off quickly. Not being able to load the rifle/bipod, every one of them had to re-adjust for their next shot and weren't able to get back on target quick enough to get that next shot off and keep the momentum going on the target.

Learned a few lessons from this match:
1) trying to add a bipod in the middle of a match, never having had used one before was not a good idea.
2) having to get back on target was not easy under some of the time constraints firing a 300WM
3) not sure how I fared with trigger control but did find myself coming off my gun more often than not to either cycle a round or load

I love free advice! being self taught, information such as this is invaluable. Thanks
