Mosin Tactical bolt project

Mosin Tactical bolt project - 01/11/14 05:27 PM

Ive grown tired of paying 50 bucks for a turned down bolt handle. My welding skills are mediocre. Si I began experimenting with Home Depot stuff and silver solder. I got the idea from this link:

http://www.gswagner.com/mosin-nagant/bolt/mnbolt.html

I used the following:

4 inch 5/16X18 TPI Grade 8 bolt 98 cents
Brass cap nut 50 cents
standard 5/16 nut 12 cents
8 5/16 washers 11 cents X 8 88 cents
Hi temp silver solder 11 bucks for a lot of solder

1. I heated the bolt with my torch and bent it into shape. I also cut off the bolt head.
2. Then I built a jig to hold my bolt body at the correct angle and drilled a 5/16 hole, working up to 5/16 in 3 steps.
3. Next I silver soldered the "bolt handle" To the bolt body. A few grinds on the end to let the solder flow through the joint enhances strength.
4. I threaded the standard nut threaded all the way up the threads, then stacked 9 5/16 washers that were locked in place byy the 5/16 caput.
5. Then I went to work with my hand grinder, files, belt sander and sandpaper to get the proper shape for the bolt knob.
6. Finally, it will be duracoated and maybe dipped in liquid rubber for a no slip grip.

It came out nice enough that I wish I had documented the process, although its pretty easy. Her are some pics of the almost completed bolt body:

I had to grind a little for clearance with the receiver:

Here it is on the rifle:
