Whats on the work bench...

Whats on the work bench... - 10/31/12 09:33 PM

Been building a nimble little 9.3x74R falling block double rifle at work. It should come in at 8 1/4ish pounds when complete. Turkish walnut stock measures 14 1/4" LOP, 1 1/2 DAC, and 2 1/2" DAH. This is the first stainless steel action we have done and we plan to fnish and engrave it to mimic a french grayed look. The barrels and ribs are still chrome moly and will be rust blued. This rifle is the first one I have done the majority of the work on. All the stock work was done by me, I assembled the barrels and fit the ribs, all the action parts were fitted off the EDM and timed by me. All thats left is to checker, finish the stock further, regulate, polish the barrels and action, engrave, blue, machine the top rib for detachable scope rings, and install the intended iron sights.

Onto the regulation stage. We shoot the rifle off bags at a 50yd target. We intend to have the barrels shoot parralel or slightly closing. So the spread center of bore to center of bore at the breach is .825", and we try to get the bullets to impact the same distance apart at 50yds. Once again this is a close range gun and slightly closing is okay too.

We change bullet impact by heating up the last 12" or so of the barrels until the solder is flowng, then spread or close the muzzles while keeping them level. We do this on a flat pece of granite.

We didnt hav emuch ammo and ths is the last target I shot before running out. Not far off. Should have a new box of ammo mid-week to finish it off. Not sure what happened the first right barrel shot, but if you can tell its still inline with the other right barrel shot. I'll spread the barrels .004"-.005" and see were it shoots.

While waiting on the ammo I decided to start checkering te buttstock. Got the borders and main lines cut in:

Very cool. What falling block action is that?

Re: Whats on the work bench... - 10/31/12 09:45 PM

Its an action designed by Bailey Bradshaw and made in-house here at Bradshaw Gun and Rifle. We make everything going on these rifles in house except the sights and we use Mcgowen or Shilen barrels; albeit assembled together by us.

Re: Whats on the work bench... - 10/31/12 10:19 PM

Wow! Very nice! I know how hard it is to get the barrels to line up. That is nice. You can also tweak the load some to allign them up. I have done this for a few big bore doubles.

Re: Whats on the work bench... - 10/31/12 10:31 PM

Being a custom manufacturer we regulate with the intended ammo/load the customer plans to use. But yes, adjusting the load can also effect regulation.

Re: Whats on the work bench... - 12/14/12 12:45 PM

Very nice work!

I currently have four rifles undergoing restocking. I am almost finished with a walnut classic stock for a 10-22. I've shortened the fore end to achieve a more balanced look with the short bull barrel. I also am working on a walnut stock for my 788, that one is barely underway. Another is a raw Interarms walnut stock for one of my 98s in .280 and I haven't really started it. I am going to finish up a refurb on an old B &C fiberglass stock on an Interarms 98 in 6mm-284. It's slow going. Wish I had the confidence to tackle checkering!

The cost for one of the break action single shots starts at 8.5k. With the level of wood, extra barrel, and add-ons for the one pictured comes out to about 12.5k.

Remington 1894 I just finished up making a new buttstock for.

The person dropped the gun and broke the wrist and trigger guard tang.

The new blank:

The end result. Had to weld the trigger guard back together and bent it for the straight grip/english grip altertation:

Re: Whats on the work bench... - 01/21/13 01:53 PM

Been needing to tackle this project for a long time. This is Mark Miller's(roadgoeson20) and Father Clint Millers barrelled action I started with in school. Its been sitting for too long...it had something funny about it which took me a while to point out. Pushed the bottom metal in a considerable amount which made things look correct. Still have some shaping of the wrist and butt section.

Here's the stock before the alterations to show the difference:

We have been building a new gun to out line. Its basically our version of a Westley Richards detachable lock double. This particular one is in 28ga on a appropriate size action. We also plan to do 20ga and 12gs frame sizes that will also double as actions for double rifles.

Anyways here's the stock I recently inletted and shaped:

Re: Whats on the work bench... - 05/04/13 10:58 PM

Many weeks ago we finished up our first shotgun build, a 28ga detachable lock SxS shotgun. Its our interpretation of a Westley Richards. The customer loves the gun, took some good pictures, and plans to submit an article to a magazine as he has connections. So maybe this one will be in a magazine...

The pictures were taken by the owner Rusty Knight, and the gun is made by Bailey Bradshaw Gun & Rifle.

Re: Whats on the work bench... - 12/24/13 06:35 PM

last one for now. This is a single shot falling block we made. It is a .45-70 w. 35" octagonal barrel. It will be used as along distance match rifle. Still a bit of work, but its nearing completion in a few weeks. Ive done nearly all the work on this one.

Re: Whats on the work bench... - 01/21/14 12:48 AM

The customer requested a damascus grip cap, butt plate, and forend inlay for his single shot .45-70.
We didnt have any billets, so away we go...

I didnt get enough pictures of the process.

First step is to layer your dissimular steels. In this case we used 1018, 1084, and L6; 19 layers to be exact.
You must stack the steel first, then weld the seams. After welding the seams the billet goes into the forge to be forge welded and pressed. Bars are drawn out in our hydrolic press to a length of 22" or so.

Once cooled down we cut the billet into 5ths, about 4" in length each. For proper forge welding and end result you also must remove all slag from the previous time spent in the forge. Since we started with 19 layers and cut it into 5ths, we then stack the billets which will result in 95ish layers. before going into the forge we weld the seams agian

The forge welding, drawing into a bar, cutting, removing slag, and stacking happens agin. This result in a billet with 475 layers. At the end we press the bar in the hydrolic press using a special die that looks like gear teeth. this draws the steel grain structure into a ladder style pattern. You'll see below on a butt plate what im talking about.

billet being cut into 5ths after the first forging process:

billets cut and starting to remove slag

billet on the welding bench for arc welding. seams on the sides and ends are welded

Way on down the road turned into grip cap and forend inlay. Just after etching:

Grip cap heat colored and lacquered(bad picture):

Butt plate made, heat colored, and lacquered. the damascus shows up great!:

Re: Whats on the work bench... - 01/28/15 02:31 AM

There have been many changes in the last year or so. I decided to start my own business and I no longer work along side Bailey Bradshaw. We still talk and visit often so no hard feelings on either end. I acquired my own shop many months back and have been doing renovations to get ready. There are still many small things left to do, but the shop is at a point I can begin gun work.

Behind my work bench I still plan on doing overhead cabinets with a small lean-on gun rack. Hopes are to also be able to hang stocks below the cabinets for finish work.

The bench by the mill that is untopped will be topped with a steel sheet. Plans are to put the furnace on it and do welding on it. Anyone care to help lift the furnace?

Not pictured is the front office/gun room.

Re: Whats on the work bench... - 01/28/15 02:31 AM

Now on to the important stuff. I don't do many bolt guns having been dabbling with the double rifles at Bradshaws. This customer is a member on another forum and a young wiper snapper at that. In fact some of the reasoning behind him going with me was the age correlation; him being two or three years older than me(24). I hope this gun sees a lot of use in the field as he works in Tanzania.

He bought the metal work from another fellow member, then sent it to me. Im not sure who has done the metal work until this point. We decided to go with a English style stock, very open grip, short forend, and trim for .404 standards.

Here I am drilling the holes and roughing the inletting on the mill:

Metal hand inletted the rest of the way:

Plans are to fill the inclusion on the barrel channel with matching wood:

Did some 2-dimensional work today:

I did a bit of rough shaping yesterday. I don't have the floorplate so I cant finish the shaping of the magazine area which is why it looks bulky still. I will get the floorplate in and finish the shaping and refining. Ammo is on the way, plans are to shoot the irons in before doing finish work.

Re: Whats on the work bench... - 02/14/15 09:20 PM

I had a little lull in projects yesterday so I figured I would contour a barrel for a 7x57 I'll be building for inventory.

Im wanting this to be a light rifle styled after English stalking rifles.

I also made a tool for turning the radius near the barrel shank, worked pretty well. No chattering! Im undecided if I will be stepping down the shank area a little. the rear sight base, front sight base, and swivel base will be made from scratch as I don't think they make them small enough for what I'm wanting.

The action is one I picked up from Sarco, there will be a lot of cleaning up to do. The blank is a piece of Turkish walnut with no drama.

I have personally seen and held this gun. Beautiful work. Its already nice as it is; but Aaron says he still has a long way to go!

Big props to Pac-Nor and Jay for delivering on time and the good customer service.

Starting on the barrels I cut off the unsafe shotgun tubes leaving me with a monoblock. Now I must bore it out to accept the rifle barrels. On this particular gun the holes in the monoblock are not parallel but rather slightly facing in toward the muzzle. To bore this out correctly I must off-set the head of the mill to account for this.

Barrels being turned to fit in the monoblock.

With 26" barrels this gun will finish out 8.75-9lbs. pictured here the barrels are 27 1/2", ribs long and unmachined.

I will have the reamer soon. After reaming the chamber I will attach the barrels permanently into the monoblock, lay ribs, regulate, install a metal trigger guard, etc...

Next up I must smoke the barrels onto the monoblock. Since the barrels aren't perfectly perpendicular with the monoblock face I have to file the monoblock face so that the barrels meet up flush. In thie pic you can see the left barrel is already fit, the right still needs done:

Both fit:

Barrels soldered in and stoned:

Milling the extractor pocket:

Tomorrow I will machine and smoke in the new extractor then fit the ribs.

I handed this .404 rifle I built over to the engraver while at the DSC show. Still work to do when I get it back, the metal has only received a preliminary polish to get it ready for engraving.:

Patients indeed. I was at the Safari Club Show today (my feet are still killin me). There were two people doing engraving . It was really neat watching them do magic. If I was doin it every other words would M______ F____r, as I ruined another piece.

So TDK, if a guy had a nice Winchester Pre-64 Winchester sitting in the safe feeling lonely and plain. Would you be interested in dressing her up a bit? I haven't been on your website to see what exactly it is you do besides build beautiful guns.

Let me know I will let the Winny's owner know wink

Ive seen the GRS booth at the show and have also hovered over my old boss while he was doing it. Very time consuming, and you don't have an eraser. I'd love to take the classes GRS offers. I could never do animals or people, but scroll and lettering is what I like anyways.

Buzzsaw, I certainly could. Of course one could rack up a heft bill pretty quickly, this gun above will have $12,000+ in it before its done, and that's a conservative build. Yet the only thing factory about it is the action.

One could just have it restocked, or even have the factory stock reshaped and refinished. Just rebarreled, maybe to a different caliber. Barrels alone can run $200-$2000. Engraving or no engraving. Different typed of metal finish. The list is long and unfortunately I don't have any set price being a custom gun. Wood blanks alone can run $500-$3000+, this one was $850. Do you want original bottom metal or aftermarket high end units like Duane Wiebe bottom metal? Iron sights only? scope only? scope and irons. Quick detach scope rings? Which quick detach setup, that can vary from $300-$1500+.

Tell me what you want and we can draw up a quote.

I don't currently have a website but will in the future due to some things in the works. I currently get work solely off of forums and word of mouth, so far that has been enough for this one man shop.
