Easiest optic for a new shooter to master?

6 yr old daughter is gonna start shooting, for those who have been here what is the easiest optic to use? She has a hard time getting a good sight picture with a conventional scope. Was thinking a red dot or maybe a pistol scope would allow some flexibility in where she places her head. What has worked for ya'll?

I would vote red dot as well ! What type of rifle will it be going on ?

Pistol or scout rifle scope will have long eye relief, which means it will be more foregiving in terms of getting her eye at the right distance.

Red dots are easy.

You could also get peep sights. They're easy (for young eyes) and teach good habits.

Red dot for sure. She will think its video game like.


My wife had never shot one before, she was ringing the gong at my range on her first time out.

Brandon972, it is 10/22 for now, then a .22-250 for a pig or three. Think i will try the red dot first and keep an eye out for a stevens cadet 22 with peep sights. Thx for the input.

Then a red dot would be perfect !! Something you might want ot look at is the Primary Arms Aimpoint T1 knock off ! http://primaryarms.com/product.sc?productId=924&categoryId=5 Great compact red dot and will mount right to the weaver style rail on a 10/22 and be the perfect height !! You will probablly find you like to shoot it as much as she does !!

Yep ! Although I like something like the Burris Fastfire for pistols ! It would work Awesome on a 10/22 but is about twice the price of the PA.

Brandon, i noticed the new Gen 7 red dot is $10 less than the Gen 6. Any reason why the newer less expensive one would not be as good? Never heard of PA stuff so have no experience with it. Thx.

Prolly issues with regular scope are due to eye relief if u know someone with straight 6x leupy or zeiss conquest 3x9x40 let her try either and she should be able to line up both scopes have huge eye relief and are in my opinion the only two scopes to start a kid hunting, and I am talking from experience. Bought our daughters the pink cricket .22. Cheap new and real cheap used. The stock rear sight is kinda cheap made, but the thing is dead on accurate. The oldest (8) will shoot my scoped .22s and .223s, but even a youth model 700 does not fit her well enough for proper shooting form or scope alignment.

My 10/22 has an ar style stock with a collapsible butt stock, fits her real well. The problem is just getting her head in the sweet spot to get a full sight picture. She can do it with the variable thats on it but it takes so long that she gets frustrated and then shooting is not fun anymore.

I sold all my ARs years ago, but want one now for the girls to use because of the collapsible stock. My dad taped a rolled up rag to the collapsible stock of my GSG so my daughter could get better sight picture. Works for her pretty good.

I have my 9yo daughter shooting a Bushmaster with an eotech HWS this year and she loves it and is actually shooting better. Last year she was going with a Tac mini 14 with a Nikon Prostaff. She has tighened her grouping up really good with the HWS, shame on the deer that shows up during youth weekend.

They are basicly the same but the gen7 has the brightness settings knob on the top where the gen 6 has it on the right side. I prefer the knob on the side so you have as little obstruction on top of the sight as possible. That is the only difference in the two from what I have found.
