I'm going on a ram hunt at Trey Kuenstler's ranch this spring and I have a few questions about appropriate caliber and grain. While I'm new to exotics, I'm assuming rams can't be much tougher than whitetail so I'm planning on using my Ruger M77 .243 with Fusion 95 grain ammo. Does anyone have any comments on my choice or advice on shot placement? Also my friend in considering using an SKS 7.62x39, would this work as well?

I would use the 243. The fusion is a good bullet and will do well.

What kind of ram? We shot a few mature audads, they are considerably bigger and sturdier than you typical hill country whitetail! But I think a well placed shot would still do the job.

Depending on the type of ram you could also use a sling and a stone.

Thank you for the replies! I'll sight in the Ruger then! To specify, I'm after smaller rams (Texas Dall, Corsican, Catalina, etc...), I can't afford a nice aoudad hunt...yet. My brother who is coming with me is going to be bowhunting so I'll just have him use whitetail appropriate broadheads.

I've killed 2 good size aoudad ewes with my 243 and 100 grain soft points. One dropped in its tracks and the other ran 30 yards. 243 is more than sufficient for the type of Rams you'll be after.
