Not that I want another hog epidemic, but it seems like warthogs would do quite well in Texas...reproduce well and thrive. Why so expensive and why don't ranches actively raise them? I guess they most likely would dig out of any fencing though.

Yes, they can get out of a fence very easily. If you are interested in one, let me know. I know where some mature ones are.

There are a few examples of it being the other way. For instance, scimitar were $16,000 when I was there in 2009. Sometimes we have more of their animals than they do. You also have to hunt the animals that are indigenous to the area you are hunting. For instance, in Namibia, an impala was $2000, but in some areas of South Africa, they are as little as $300.

I believe the impala that was $2000 would likely be the Black Faced subspecies.

That's what I interpreted it as the other possible interpretation, would be worth hogs, which live in suburbs and have no open season.
for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

Where I was, the common impala was not indigenous to the area. Thus the only way to hunt them was on a game ranch (they were imported to that area). Thus the high price. Your better prices will be on animals that are either plentiful or indigenious to that area. The game industry throughout much, not all, of Southern Africa is similar to our Texas game industry.
