My nephew had never killed a turkey, never hunted them for that matter. My sister invited my wife and I up for the last weekend of south zone. I have killed plenty of birds so I was more interested in calling for my nephew. We set up Saturday morning in what has been a very productive spot in the past. We had a good gobble response after an hour. Then we could hear he was getting closer and the blood started boiling. At 200 yards we got a visual on the bird coming down the fence, but on the opposite side of the goat wire fence. I have experience with turkeys and fences. It is a mental thing for them suckers and can hang them up bad. He got to 50 yards and the fence stopped him dead in his tracks. He would puff up and gobble then go to eating. A classic sign of the birds transitioning away from mating season. He stayed there for an hour and then drifted off. Exciting, and it was a good lesson for nephew. Never expect it to be easy and any little thing can happen.

Day 2 we started out further down the fence from the day before. We heard a dozen drop off the roost. An hour later we had two birds answering and closing the distance to us. Then they just stopped. Nothing!!! I said "Jake we gotta make something happen". We yanked up the spread and headed to another roost on the west end of the ranch. We set up and got no response. My nephew said he could hear a gobble to the north. Knowing the terrain I realized it had to be near a mile away. I said "Jake, it is 4th and 10 and if we are going to get a bird we have to get as close to him as possible". The problem is there is a county road with a fence on both sides. Oilfield traffic is crazy on the county road. We got 50 yards off the road and we set up in a little wash so we could not be seen from the county road. I didn't want some jackass coming along and shooting at the decoys with us sitting there.

I called as hard and loud as I could. No answer. 5 minutes later I called as loud as I could. We got a gobble at the 500 to 600 maybe distance away. Then nothing for 20 minutes. I called and we got an answer from the same spot. Then nothing for 30 minutes. I told my nephew this would be a miracle bird to come that distance, this late in the morning, across two fences and a county road. Another 20 minutes goes by and BOOM!!! That sucker blows up with a gobble that sent ours eyes wide open. Game on Jakester!!! Jake stood up to be able to see out of the wash out and said he was fanned out in the middle of the derned road. 1 oilfield truck would have blown the whole deal. The old tom crossed the second fence and closed in the distance. He came right in and Jake pulled the trigger. Jake was sending 1 7/8 ounce load of #5 shot to the head at 15 yards. It was about to be nothing but dead. CLick!!! Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh. Jake eased the slide back and got another shell in there, got on the bird. CLICK!!!! He was using my brand new Benneli SBE2. The bird figured out he was in the wrong spot and turned away headed for ole Miss. Jake yanked the slide back and let her fly, got on the bird and BOOM! That time it worked. COme to find out you have to let that slide fall on its own or push it to a locked positioin. If not the hammer will fall bu the pin can't hit the shell.

4th and 10 and we made it pay. I was just as excited as my nephew. I would much rather call a bird in for someone else than I would shoot one. Thank you Jakester.

Gotta love when it comes together like that. Birds were uncooperative at our place the final weekend. I had already tagged out, but it would have been nice to put a guest I was with on one.

I watched that bird Saturday real close. He would puff up and gobble then go to eating. That to me is as classic of a sign they are in between almost done and completely done for the year. We just got lucky and found a late season lover clap
