Hoping to go on my first turkey hunt next week before the season is over. I'm extremely new to turkey hunting and cannot tell if there is a gobbler in this group of birds. My guess by the beards is they are all jakes. Any help is appreciated.

They all appear to be jakes. Jakes tend to group up with other jakes. Nothing wrong with harvesting a jake as your first bird. If you get one to put on a show and it gets you excited, by all means, take him. It'll be a long time until next spring.

You can shoot those. A jake is a legal bird, its just a immature gobbler. If it has a beard, and a red white and/or blue head it should be a legal bird (some hens have beards). The easiest way to tell a jake is not the short beard length and thickness (some gobblers will have short beards) it is the tail. A mature bird has an even semi circle fan like the photo of the month, a jake has longer feathers in the center of its fan and shorter feathers on the sides. Basically the middle of the fan sticks out 1-2" from the other feathers.

If they gobble, a jake sometimes has only has a partial gobble. I keep the jake tail feathers for my strutting decoy. If you put a hen decoy on the ground like she is ready to breed and the strutting jake behind her, gobblers will come running when they see it.

They all eat the same. In my opinion a turkey is a turkey.

I prefer jakes actually. They seem a little more tender.
