Moved to the Hill Country area a little under a year ago. The family ranch is a little too far to go on a quick hunt. Anyone know of a good public land that I could call up some turkeys on?

I've only called in 3 birds on the public land I'm hunting this year, and two of those came in together on the youth only hunt weekend. I limited out last year on public land. It's looking like I may have to hit up my lease if my luck doesn't change. I'm in the same boat as the OP though. My lease isn't close enought to just run out and hunt.

Lookup Texas Draw hunts and see which WMA's provide turkey hunts. I believe there are several in Central Texas. Call the WMA and ask if there will be any open slots. If so, you can show-up as a "stand-by" hunter - meaning you did not participate in the annual draw but would like the chance at an open slot. I drew Kerr WMA this year so I had a slot. However, nine "stand-bys" showed up and they were all allowed to purchase a slot and hunt.
