My son is five and has been excited to go hunting. We dropped off a couple other hunters at dawn and got to the area we were going to sit. After getting all the gear set and us in the blind I settle in and wait fifteen minutes to start calling. I look behind me at minute six and there's a gobbler at the end of the road, 120 yards away, dust bathing. I hit the call and he gobbles and goes into full strut. I hit the call again and here come two hens down the road towards our decoys. The gobbler follows them on a rope. They cross the distance in about five minutes and my son stays amazingly still and quiet. I'm quite proud of him.

Here's where the story gets funny. I wanted success today, so I brought a rifle in the blind with us in case I wanted to take a longer shot. The gobbler is strutting circles around my jake decoy at 15 yards. I pull up the shotgun and the safety won't click. I used the gun in the water a few weeks ago (Benelli Nova) and I thought I cleaned it super well, but I guess not. So I finally jam the safety off, go to pull the trigger and it won't go bang. I crank on the trigger about three times and finally just put the scattergun down and grab the rifle. After I stuck the bullet at the base of his neck he went down like a ton of bricks. I don't think I've felt more relieved.

So from the moment we sat down to the moment the gobbler was on the ground was about eleven minutes and now I have to fix my shotgun!

If that gobbler had wanted your lunch money, it would have been hand to hand combat grin Got the job done and your son looks to have had a great time up
