Check out the Little Lake Creek Wilderness Area in the Sam Houston National Forest. Not a whole lot of deer in that section, but a good number of squirrels.

Try the Caddo National Grasslands, around Telephone, Tx. There's more tree rats there than you could EVER kill!
Costs you a measly $48 a year/season to hunt. And there's some good camping around the two lakes there. Primitive, for the most part. There may be some electric available?

Mmmm Hmmm

A lot of hunters guffaw at squirrel hunting, but I find it extremely fun. Started off as a kid and still today. Had the best time ever (so far) hunting taking my 6 y/o on a squirrel hunt this past winter.

Anyone know on Cado Grasslands near Telephone, tx where a good spot would be out there. Took son this afternoon and we walked a long ways up trail west of road that runs between both lakes, hiked west through thick woods, not seeing a single squirrel, from 4pm to 7pm for most part, where are they?

Get in the timber, sit down and be quiet. You will get a shot.

We tried that, didnt see a single one. Wondering if near one of lakes, being closer would be better, not sure. What area is best out there?

Early in the morning, right at daybreak, quietly ease into a spot that has a lot of squirrel nests and sit very still. If there are nests, there are squirrels.

A lot of folks underestimate the challenge of hunting squirrels on public land. If they have been hunted, they get real spooky. They act NOTHING like the squirrels folks see in town. It's a lot like deer hunting in miniature. It's great practice for big game, both hunting and shooting.

You show me a good squirrel hunter, I'll show you a good hunter.

That's hard to believe, but strange things happen all the time, lol. Just like was said above, sneak into just about any place with hard woods and there should be plenty. At least there is every time I go. They bark at you, rustle leaves around that sounds like a pack of hogs and drop stuff out of the trees making you think there's a deer coming, lol. I know a couple of good places, but can't tell you how to get there...at least not on here. It's hard to explain. If you know how to get to the back side of Lake Crockett, that's always been a pretty good place. Study a map and see if you can figure it out. I think it's on the TPWD website. Also, when you buy your permit, they send you a book with some maps in them. You might can tell from it, but I remember them being pretty small, and not very detailed. Good luck to you and I'll be over there in November, hunting. Maybe we can meet up some day and I can show you a couple of good spots.

I have shot a lot of squirrels by walking up on them, using a slow "stalking" approach. Probably not the best way to get your limit but still a lot of fun.

Anybody seeing more squirrel activity with the cooler nighttime temps upon us and still warm daytime temps?

You can use either one. I prefer a 22 in order to limit the damage to the meat.

Using a .22 and aiming for the head, makes squirrel hunting as challenging as anything else you could hunt. A silenced .22, that changes the whole deal. one of my favorite things to do
