If the hogs aren't eating all the corn (broadcast primarily for the deer), then it seems the Racoons (and even squirrels) are at it.

The Coons are walking right over corn on the ground...to climb the legs of the feeders and 'spin out' even more.

Squirrels do it too...but not to any appreciable degree.

Just have to thin them out, from time to time.

Be sure you have your hunting license and that you can document the depredation or destruction of private property.

They've pretty much learned to avoid the traps ( I have live traps, leg hold traps and 'dukes'). I've had to resort to sniping them from about 100 yards out. 17 HMR is just about right for Coons (with good shot placement).

Don't really need night vision for the Coons. I have LED lights at the feeders (for hogs), so its pretty much like the Coons are 'walking onto a stage' when they show up, easy to see from an elevated stand.

If they stay on the ground and eat the corn...that is fine, I recognize that any and everything is going to get some. But IF they climb the leg to spin out the corn (most do), then I send them a 17 grain reminder.

I may eventually get a .22 mag barrel for this one. I have a .22 LR varmint barrel for it and of course it is wearing a .17 HMR now. The receiver will accept all three chamberings though (.17/22LR/22mag). Barrels swap out easily.

Someday I may cook a coon, but probably not any time soon. The freezer is full of hog meat right now. My Brother-in-Law grew up in rural Arkansas and they ate coon when they could get it. He says it tastes okay, but it's greasy. Some of the recipes I've seen allude to this, recommending boiling it first to remove some of the fat before continuing with the preparation.

I have two unwritten rules:
1.
2.

I got 2/3 way thru skinning one once before the gag-reflexes (from the smell) overwhelmed me.
Nice fat healthy coon - lotsa fat between skin and meat!!
I've never had trouble butchering any other animal or fish before.
This smelled worse than a rotting carcass 4 days old.
Really, I just wanted the coon-skin;
I did manage to complete the skinning, but it required 3 - 4 more breaks to finish.

I may try some, but someone ELSE is gonna have to do the prep/cooking - I ain't gettin near till its done!

I've never hunted in a state where it was legal to take hen turkeys. Maybe it is in Texas.

God Bless

'Bearded Hens' in many (most) Counties are legal.

Hi O/D,

The scope is a Vortex Viper PST 2.5 x 10 X 44 mm with illuminated Reticle (MOA version).

It is plenty of magnification for hunting purposes. If you spend more time shooting 'paper' and wish to see your hits, then something with more magnification might be appropriate. A .17 caliber hole is not easy to see at 100 yds.

I use a spotting scope when sighting in.
