Give a coon enough time and they'll figure out the solution to a problem. I have a plastic bucket with a screw-on top. In the top is a pour spout with a screw-on cap. In the bucket is a bunch of corn. When hunting season was over and I quit putting corn at the pond, I just put the bucket out under an open shed off the side of the barn. It took them a while, but:

Phase 1, unscrew the spout cap. Try to reach the corn. Can't do it.
Phase 2, finally chew off the spout. Now they can reach the corn, so they ate as far as they could reach.
Phase 3, can't reach the corn anymore, so gnaw out the hole in the top. They could now reach as far as their legs could reach.
Phase 4, again can't reach the corn, so what to do now. Took them a couple of days, but they have finally turned over the bucket.
Phase 5, roll the bucket till the hole is facing down. Now the corn is disappearing fast.

From finding the corn to Phase 5, I guess it took them a month or so.

I was shooting them off my yard deer feeder, but finally screened off the feeder. Don't need to shoot them now. If I could talk the wife into trying a good coon recipe, I might start shooting them again. Lord knows' I have zillions of them.
