Have any of ya'll had success in calling coyotes at night, and if so, what are some tips/techniques/advice?

From my limited experience, I usually see most coyote activity either at dusk or at dawn. I have shot them at all hours of the night while out hog hunting, but I wasnt calling them, it was just luck (bad luck on their part lol) if I saw any.

I am going to a big high fence place this weekend to give the owner and one of the hunting guides an intro into night hunting with thermals and night vision. They have a coyote problem killing some of their stock and want to get into night hunting and I am happy to show them what I know. I should have had them set up a gut pile or something, but didnt think about it until just now. The plan is to go out after dark and stay out most of the night and it would be nice to be able to call some in, rather than just depending on blind luck. Maybe if I do a good job, I can wrangle another invite in the future lol

I have a fox pro that I have had good luck with at dusk and dawn, just have never used it at, say midnight. I also have a mouth call. In addition to coyotes, we will be shooting any hogs on sight.

It should be a fun experience and I dont know if it is cool with them to give too much info about the place, but I'll check with them when I get there and hopefully I will have some good pics and stories to share when I get back.

Night calling works. I can't really compare results to day or dusk calling, but I have certainly had success with it.

We called coyotes this past week and had thermal and night vision. It is a true game changer. Any distress call seems to call in a yote or cat. Cats come in a little slower and more cautious. Good luck with it and keep scanning 360 degrees around you. I had a bobcat come in behind me about 20 yards away and just sit there. Not sure how long he was there as I was changing out some batteries and looked up and saw I had a new friend! He got away but I am sure we will meet again. Oh yeah, take extra batteries up

Yes, one tactic is to listen for them, and if you aren't hearing them, crank up the coyote howl. Then walk up to where you hear the howl until you are about 120-150 yards away, then do the rabbit in distress, or coyote pup howl. They will hear it, and if they don't come after 5 minutes, walk away, then come back even quieter than you originally came, and after putting on something to cover your scent. Do a different call than the one you did first, and if they still don't come, they might have left, or still smell/hear you.

I have killed just as many yotes in the early morning and late in the evening, as I have killed in the middle of the night. Just make darn sure you know what your shooting at when its night. It also helps if you have big area to hunt on.

1)Communicative
2)Rally Howl
3)Distress call

Kill coyotes if they appear, or run pup in distress if no coyotes are coming in. If there are still no coyotes coming in wrap it up and move to another spot.
During mating season use more aggressive calls, and when fawns hit the ground use a fawn in distress call. Those are the things that I know work. Hope that helps!

There are a few being called in at night on this video:

Thanks for the help and tips ya'll! I programmed the fox pro last night using 2 rabbit calls, but after reading the tips, I am going to change one of them to pup in distress... havent ever used that one before.

I dont know about coyotes, but I know for a fact that "fawn distress" will call in a doe. I was messing around with that sound last summer and within seconds of playing it, a doe came tearing out of the bushes from about 300 yrds away and went right to the call. Turned it off, she left, turned it back on and same thing. After about 3 times of watching her do that, I felt sorry for her.. she was really anxious to find the "fawn"... and turned it off for good that day.

BTW... when is mating season for coyotes. For some reason I am thinking spring, but I am not actually sure.

Thanks again!
