Is it better to night hunt for predators in full or no moon? Or does it not matter?

I doubt it matters much, but animals are supposed to move based on the moon being overhead or underfoot, not on how bright it is.

Now, if you don't have a spotlight, it would matter quite a bit on your end. grin

Animals move when they move. Solunar calendars were developed for fish and haven't been studied (or no positive results found) for tying to specific mammal movements such as deer. People swear by them, but as near as I can tell, whether or not the animals are moving depends more on where you are rather than where the moon is.

Just an observation I see more coyotes after a full moon when it is not so bright. My GUESS is that it is harder for them to hunt during fulloon and are hungry after.

Have always had better success on dark nights. Moon 'phase' seemed to make no difference but WHEN the moon was up (or not) did. Darker always better for me.

My understanding is that it is new moon, then full moon. Then it is at moonrise and moonset. And rise and set should be within one hour of sunrise/sunset. That is when you're supposed to be able to get the big ones.

Yes, because only the big coyotes are active at those times?

I had a guy once tell me that spreading Kool-Aid mix around under your feeder would bring in larger boars. I never figured out and he never explained how the Kool-Aid mix was tied to size and sex of hogs, but he assured me that was the way to regularly bring in larger boars.

popcorn realize my posts ain't worth 2cents tis cool with that... Me caveman
days or should i say nights... As pappy say's: proof tis in the pudding . Would sit out in woods were hogs rooted up.. Listen, if hogs were moving in different directions, move twards em... Full moon nights, & many times got cornered in thick briars, things are completly different, rofl difference between night & day... Tis why on WMA hunts didn't bother with hog signs along ATV trails... Not ta start a debait, most of it done at night when no pressure... My GPS has the best times & good times ... Yet archery hunts or hog hunts, always carried pen & note pad wrote time & other info down... Some times it right place right time, & hunting pressure, changes all... The guys with NV & Thermal out thar pudding boots on ground can answer this best... flag

Coyote calling for me seems to be better on dark nights that bright ones. I don't have hard data to back that up, just the way it seems to me.

after 40 years of calling, ive deducted that, there are way to many factors involved to pin point one thing as a positive or a negative. the moon does affect varmint movement but to how much, not sure. ive always caught more critters trapping on dark nights. have several ideas as to why but not sure. one thing i know for sure ... on bright nights, they see YOU. this is probably the # 1 reason less varmints are killed on moonlight nights just my 02

I agree with that. They are out on the bright nights for sure, it is just much harder to get them up within range. I am sure that has to do with how well they can see you. We were out calling the other night with the moon full, and it really seemed to be the case.

They move with a full moon or no moon. I hunted a contest this last Saturday with a full moon. Killed 4 coyotes, 2 fox, a cat, and a coon. Called in another 6 or 7 fox, a cat and a couple different coyotes that started in then looked right at the hunting rig and turned tail. It's just easier for them to spot something out of the ordinary with a bright moon.

Calling on Full moon is more difficult as they can spot you as easily as it was daytime unless you happen to get the light in their eyes before they pick you out.
I just camo up and backup against brush ,use the shadows to your advantage, and just make it work. I don't bother hunting from a vehicle and in fact take pains to hide it just like daytime.
I too hunted a tournament Saturday night and we won. grin

Most successful on the darkest nights. But that's me (and probably my movement).

on my observations over the last 50yrs, prey seems to move less on full moon nights, I see more deer during the day hours during full moon, coyotes are highly nocturnal, that doesn't mean you won't see during the day, I have called in a lot of coyotes during daylight hours
