Yesterday morning at 7:30 am my wife calls down to me that there is another coyote in the backyard but this time our lab is in the backyard with it. Coyote seems to be taunting the dog and is popping in and out of the bush line at the back of the yard. I rush down to the basement and retrieve the .243 this time and some 55 grain varmint rounds. At this point the coyote seems to have disappeared back into the trees so I get the cottontail distress caller and give a soft 30-40 seconds on the caller. No luck he seems to have moved on and the dog is now back inside. About 30 minutes later the other dog starts going ape at the bay window. I look out and the coyote is back except he is only about 40 yards from the house. I have the gun ready this time as I had not put it away yet. I load 2 rounds, chamber one and slide the window open. This time he spooks when I open the window and starts trotting back towards the treeline. I am tracking him in the scope but do not have a good shot. Just before he reaches the treeline at about 100 yards he stops, turns and looks back at the house - his mistake. I squeeze the trigger and he goes down on the spot and does not rise. Hit him mid shoulder. Looks almost identical to the one I took a few days earlier. Another healthy looking young male:

Kudos. I have the same problem with coyotes. They will come up in the front yard sometimes from the pasture across the road or to the back of the house from my pasture. Some bolt back into the pasture when I open the door, others don't survive. About 5 years ago or so, I shot a total of six coyotes off my back porch. A couple of them had been harassing my 1300 lb horse. Lately they have been dealing my dog misery, yipping and barking at her trying to draw her out to them.

If this keeps up you can have guided hunts off your back porch! They are healthy looking coyotes.

I saw a special on Animal Planet a few years ago about pack hunters. Coyotes are #2 behind the wolf for efficiency. They will use a decoy coyote to lure animals (dogs) close enough for the pack to gang up and attack.

Is your dog a female? Possibly in heat? Female but she is spayed so no heat going on.

I use to see one on an empty lot watching the afternoon traffic in Dallas right off of the tollway. I also saw the biggest bobcat I've ever seen right in the middle of Plano. Those predators are adapting and moving back into the cities now that no one is taking them out.
