Howdy gents. Im new to this site and looking for advice on public areas to hunt. A little intro- Im originally from back east where public land is plentiful and if you ask to hunt on neighbors land, its free. Im looking for public land to hunt rabbits where I can use a dog for flushing and retrieving.

Not interested in spending hundreds on a lease.

Thanks!

Welcome! flag

Sorry I can't help with public land in Texas. Now if you visit the state just east of you I can help.

Good luck.

Their is section lower public hunting have seen rabits on every WMA that i've been on. Not sure of use of dog's. Couple ya can use for hunting hog's, know some use dogs for squirrel hunts. You have beagles? Best wishes flag

Thanks Colt! I don't have any beagles, Im looking at getting an English Springer and eventually another Brittany. I'd like to get into upland/migratory birds and rabbit. The dogs should be natural for bird, but flushing and retrieving is basic skills. Also an added bonus that in TX I can take rabbit during bird season.

Public hunting for small game like rabbits is available, check TPW website.

Bird hunting you will be hard pressed to find any on public lands.

Hogs will be hit and miss depending on time of year and number of people hunting.

If you want to hog hunt you are better off to book a hunt. Success rate is high and cost is pretty low.
