Hunted further south and a little east of where we have been hunting Fri and Sat. Scenting conditions were decent, which was surprising based on low humidity and heat, but the bird population was a lower than then the 20+ covey days we had 25 miles north a couple of weeks ago, and covey sizes were down to 10 to 15 birds vs 20+ (and it hasnt been hunted in 10 years). Seems to be a SW to NE line in the Rolling Plains where the birds go from real good (to west) and then it drops off fast if you go to the east of that line. Best hunting stretch was in 73 degree heat Friday afternoon when we hunted from just 4pm to 6pm and had five coveys pointed. Probably last hunt of the year based on fishing weather sitting in.
First pic of Sadie cross-legged is only the second point like that I can remember.

Great pictures. Love cross-legged points.

Quail hunting is like walking into, and out of a beautiful painting all day long. Gene Hill

Do the Lewis tail savers stay on or you lose some now and then.

They stay on. Her tail is so bad that what I do is about a 3/8 inch wide strip of guerilla tape in the right spot on her tail and then get the base of the tail protector to abut against that base tape, and then do an overlapping strip. When you take off that narrow strip, it takes some effort to not pull a lot of hair, but its better than beating the tail down to the bone. I have tried a couple of different types of tape as the base layer (medical etc), but they work loose after and hour or so and you lose it

I have been using electrical tape on the tail tip. It works but does take the hair off. Will give the Lewis covers a try next season

I like that. Means she has lots of tail action. Happy with her work. up up

Yep. They are good enough for me if they are good enough for John P Cowan.
