The majority of the State has been getting hammered.
Wettest Spring I can remember (and that's a few).

How about that Panhandle?
Hoping for good rain, good cover, more birds this year!

I believe we're about to see this taper off, at least for the majority of the State.
Hope it works out up there.

In collingsworth county there has been about 23 inches of rain since jan 1. That's about a years worth of normal rainfall in less than 6 mo. 2 weeks ago there seemed to be pairs scattered all over pasture I was turkey hunting in. Hopefully we will have some good hatching and rearing conditions. Be nice to have some huntable populations for a change.

I think the areas that have avoided the large hail will see pretty good populations of both quail and pheasant this season.

I had a report for about 3 miles s of hedley in donley county of 28 inche's for just month of may. It may get to point that early hatches will be down if birds have to contend with that much. I'm still not complaining though!

I would guess that this amount of rain IS NOT going to be good for quail or pheasant, maybe a late hatch.

I know it is a lot of rain, but this rain is good for young growing quail and pheasants, with much more good than harm. This is a "garden of eden" pattern producing green lush nutritious vegetation for food, lots of cover leading to more more protection from predator and greater cover produces more shade from summer heat and lot and lots of insects. Chicks grow fast and chicks that hatch three or four weeks ago can swim and have some wing feathers.

Go to "weather.com" (weather channel) at the top right of the page type in the name of any city in the panhandle and you will notice that over the last 30 day (month of May) most places had about 10 inches, that is good over a 30 day period, everybody did not flood. Dalhart did not get to their May historical average, they got lest than two inches. But Lubbock did get 11.8 inches spread out over month, that rain will green up the pastures and the sandy soil will soak in the water.

Remember the summer of 2011 hot and dry with dried grass no insects and dehydrated chicks. July and August can easily get hot again this year. I think all this moisture and nutrition these rains are bring will produce a second hatch for panhandle quail and pheasant. With plenty of insects flying around chicks grow fast and the adult hens will also find lots of nutrients and insects in the green fields and quickly lay more eggs and try to hatch them.
