I knew the lake was there but didn't know about the wma at the north end. Has anyone here ever hunted it? our lease isn't far from there and we are having the best season we have had in years. The oklahoma wildlife department website says quail can be hunted during the whole statewide season except the first 9 days of gun deer season. If anyone is looking for a late season place to go, you should check it out, I am sure there are birds to be found out there. Best thing is, it's less than 3 hrs from Dallas. Only bad thing is they don't have a 5 day non resident license for quail anymore.

I have hunted Waurika lake area for whitetail,hogs,turkey..The deer are HUGE!and the hogs are the same..
It is Archery only --Any area around the lake for large game.
Birds--you will have to check seasons and dates for Waurika lake hunting..It is shotgun with pellet ratings and size.
Only certain areas are open at separate times when other open seasons are open around the state.. -Waurika may be closed off limits, So always check.You can call the Ranger station at the Waurika Dam headquarters or the Oklahoma game warden for Jefferson County.Lots of Quail..sometimes the season is open and sometimes its not..It is Corp of engineers land.

If anyone is interested, I have the game wardens business card, we met him for the first time a few weeks ago. P.M me and I will give you his info. I would love to hear about someone going. I will try to talk my buddy into driving by and taking a look at it. We haven't hunted the same pasture twice at our lease this year (actually I think we did run one spot twice) and we still have enough left over to hunt the five more days that we are going to hunt, without even hunting all of our lease, so I doubt we will put a dog out there.

I hunted the WMA years ago. At that time there were plenty of birds

I'll be driving past there this weekend but headed to KS. Might have to try it before the 15th (OK's end of season, correct?)? I have a lifetime in OK so that really helps on the cost.

Yes it says it's open during the statewide quail season and that is Feb 15th.

My place is very close to there and we had a huntable population of quail for the first time in years there. Might quail hunt it next year after deer season. I like to dream!

Not many birds on our place near there this year. Not many at all.

Bummer. Would like to go up to the OK panhandle or SW Kansas - lots up there this year but didn't really want to make the trip. Trying not to miss any work and a 7 hour+ drive makes it tough to get much hunting in on the weekend.

We have stopped hunting our Waurika area lease. We were only moving 4ish coveys a day and it wasn't worth pushing the birds. Too bad.

Ours wasn't that bad but close. We had a couple of hunts with 4-5 coveys in a few hours and a few with just 2-3 coveys in 4-5 hours. I think we got too much rain at nesting time and it flooded the nests. We had more birds last year.

Thanks. Was hoping for better news, but I guess it could be worse. Rethinking what to do now.

Go north of Elk City, Black Kettle Grasslands. Or, Ellis County WMA west of Arnett.
