Some of the coonasses in S. La. hunt them ---- I dont think anyone in Tx does. We call them poule d' eau--------- (pull do)--- they taste a lot like seagull.

About 10 years ago, California suddenly had a 50 bird limit on coots, WTF?
A game warden told me that so many European hunters had moved to California that they were shooting too many and they needed to set a limit.
he said since all they eat is grass, they taste just fine, but the only meat is in the thighs and legs as they swim all the time and rarely fly.
They used to swim right up to you, but not any more. FYI, when I was growing up they were called mudhens

I can look it up, but I've been here in Texas for 3 years, but unless its been lowered I'm sure it is, their meat is purplish red and surer doesn't look like normal duck

Ojai Hunter, I used to live outside of Corpus and rail hunted every year. Its hard work but fun and fast wingshooting. If you can get ahold of a boat I can give you some great public spots for sora and clappers. I loved hunting those things. We did it east coast style with my old wood hulled scull boat push poling through the swamps and jump shooting them. Coots.... not so sure about that.
John.

I'd love to pole for rails. I know some guys that do it in New Jersey but I haven't been able to make the trip yet.

Dave, we need to talk this season. I can give you some killer spots around the Nueces river bottoms outside of Portland. My wood boat is at my ranch in Lometa a long ways from the coast!

I have seen thousands of COOTS in Conroe and Livingstone lakes.
Is there any outfitter/guide for that area.
