Have seen lots of info about not over-cleaning this gun. Just wrapped up early teal, duck season and sandhill hunting.

Thoughts?

Every 3-4 hunts... I clean mine with a mix of gas and 2 cycle oil. Completely disassemble it and let the choke, action and trigger mechanism soak in the mixture, run a bore snake down the barrel, clean it all up and then blow it all out with the air compressor.

Last year I went from Dove season till the end of spring turkey season before I cleaned mine for the first time. If I drop my SBEII in the mud I will clean it but other than that I will usually pull the whole gun apart once a year and clean and lube everything.

I clean mine when it starts jamming, which is about once a year. When I do I pull it all apart, wash first with high pressure water hose, dry, few drops of oil. Been doing thIs for 10 years.

If I was going to put it in a closet from the end of the season to the beginning of the next, then I would clean it.

If you are shooting clays in the off season then I'd clean it when it starts jamming or right before next season starts.

Thought for the day: Ducks were almost hunted to extinction long before camo was invented.

i dont have a SBE but i hope you dont mind if i cut into this dance.
the only things i do to my Mossberg semi auto are:
1 - spray Rem oil on it prior to each hunt.
2 - clean it before i rattle can her new paint job every summer. (this year im planning a DIY multicam, with more brown to match where i hunt)

I haven't broke mine down in three years. Still working fine. I will wipe it off with rem oil every other week or so just to keep the rust off the receiver and trigger. Other than that I treat it like a boat oar.

Don't believe them. No such thing as a magical gun. Keep it clean like you would any piece of equipment.

If you don't get too much oil or mud in them- they will run a LONG time without cleaning. I shoot mainly beretta 391 type guns. Same deal.

That is true of any gun. I think they are fine guns but not mythical legends. I have seen them fail to cycle on more than one occasion with both light loads and heavy loads.

I have a M2. Usually clean bolt body, trigger group and barrel 1-2 times during 1st dove season, once after duck season. I will clean recoil tube and spring once a year. The first 3 years after I own this gun, I never clean recoil tube, then it got too dirty and became "single-shot" in one of my duck hunt. After that, I will always clean the tube before season start.

I clean mine so good that it only needs it once or twice a decade.

It ain't hard to do, so I clean them after every hunt.
Can't ever blame a misfire on a dirty gun.
Does it need it everytime? NO.
Cleaning them on the bench after the weekend has become part of the hunt. Just like doing it.

If it's a rainy hunt I'll wipe it down with wd. Other than that I'll pull trigger and clean at the end of the season.

I asked the question, here is what I did today. I spoofed the barrel with a bore snake, wiped the bolt rails with a Rem wipe, and lubed the choke screw threads with an extended choke.

That's it and thanks to all of you for the feedback.

Yeah the people who say that over cleaning it will cause issues probably are not doing it right. I used to clean mine after really nasty hunts or at the end of the season.

I used to clean Garretts for him about once a season too.

I've taken it in for a professional cleaning a couple times.
