 Help with a public land law...

I've got my public permit, and I've been duck hunting quite a bit this year around Ray Roberts. Dove season reopens Friday. I've never been dove hunting on public lands, so ive been reading the rule book and I was hoping someone would verify that im reading it right. I know it's 100% steel or hybrid shells for waterfowl, but I can use lead for dove correct??? I won't be shooting dove and duck at the same time, I dont want to even temp a GW to give me a ticket. Any more info i need? I dont believe its required to wear orange at Ray Roberts...

You don't have to wear orange when hunting Turkey's or Migratory birds. Yes you can shoot dove with lead but don't even have it in your bag if you are hunting ducks. Be sure to pack up all of you waterfowl gear and put it away before going out to hunt dove. If you want to be safe they make steel 6 & 7 shot for dove.

You don't have to wear orange when hunting Turkey's or Migratory birds. Yes you can shoot dove with lead but don't even have it in your bag if you are hunting ducks. Be sure to pack up all of you waterfowl gear and put it away before going out to hunt dove. If you want to be safe they make steel 6 & 7 shot for dove. Shoot steel 6s for both.

I would take all steel just to be safe. My dad got a ticket while goose hunting for having a couple lead 8s loads rolling around the back seat of his truck. they were walking out of the field and the warden met them at the truck, when he opened the back door the warden saw lead and wrote a ticket.

The law says nontoxic for waterfowl. If you are only hunting doves and don't have any duck hunting gear etc.. I would'nt worry about it. Never had a problem. lake namer

Several years ago I got a ticket on a WMA for using lead shot on doves. This was my first ever dove hunt and I was told by the guy I was hunting with to bring lead shot.
Long story short, the warden told us that because duck hunting is allowed on the same property, all toxic loads were banned. He said they had just changed the rule the year before. I think it's just an easy way for the state to make money off of us. Confuse us and they can get away with our money. They gave 13 tickets that morning. It wasn't even duck season!!!
Point is, it's best not to just assume based off of what someone on a forum told you... Call the game warden and get a straight answer!

No lead around water, that's the purpose of the law. Nope, the purpose of no lead was to make waterfowl hunting too expensive......greenies..... I just got back from duck hunting, had lead 8's in truck as quail hunting too.....also had lead 4 buck as been hunting sandhill cranes too.....steel for ducks and geese.....not sure how hunting out of one truck I can't have different shots/shells without driving 5 hours home....

Got a question for you. I'm a moderator on the Texas Hunting Forum and would like to clear up another confusing wording in the hunting regulations.
A question was asked if a waterfowl hunter would be in violation if they have lead shot locked in their vehicle while they are out hunting waterfowl. This assumed that no lead shot is on the hunter's person, not in his boat, etc while waterfowl hunting. There are conflicting reports of what hunters are being told when asking this question.
Examples why this could happen is hunters who are traveling/camping hunting different types of game on different days or locations. Or a hunter wanting to hunt waterfowl during a morning hunt leaving any shells containing lead locked in their parked vehicle, but return to their vehicle at mid day to swap out any birds taken, gear, and non toxic shotgun shells for lead shells to hunt other game such as upland or dove during an afternoon hunt.

Aren't most decoy weights made of lead? I think that's funny. It's a good thing they never come off the string and get lost in the water.

Thanks for the replies and fwd'd email! I called the warden over Cooke co. She stated as long as im not hunting waterfowl i can shoot lead at Ray Roberts Corp land. She said the only reason to shoot steel for dove is if im hoping to shoot ducks that pass over. Only dove = lead. Mixed bag =steel.

At Alazan WMA, you are required to use steel shot for dove since its flooded in the winter, but it has a levy system that is very controlled.

On target. Succinct. And correct. Conjecture and opinion is the dominion of most Internet experts. Then again, I hear some folks have an extra special relationship with TPWD executive management that allows them to forego the use of common sense and critical thinking and substitute opinion or conjecture to imply they're smarter than they really are when the facts aren't known or don't suit their purpose.
