For all of you Dove and early Teal hunters ... be especially alert where you are walking and where the dogs are running this season because Rattlesnakes have significantly lost their ability/willingness to rattle as a warning over the past several years. Most wildlife experts attribute it to the increasing feral hog population that will kill and eat Rattlers.

I agree with the careful statement. I see/hear a lot about death and destruction so far as snakes and dogs. I get a pretty concentrated dose of the stories be it that is what I do.

So far as pigs eating the rattling ones I don't agree. There have been no scientific studies to substantiate the claims. Rattlers are odd creatures. With the snakes I have kept over the years, it is impossible to tell which one will rattle and which one will not. I can pick the ones rattling really well the night before a clinic. That does not guarantee them to rattle at the clinic the next day. I need 3 snakes at a clinic but I usually take 8 to 10 for this very reason.

Rumors about snakes, or anything not well known to humans, get started and they perpetuate into something absolutely not true. Water Moccasins! In the movies, stories around a campfire ect have been demonized for decades. After well over a decade of working with them, I can tell you they are not at all what you have been told. I know! I will get bashed and I know someone will have their great Uncle Joe's Neighbor got mauled by a pack of them type of story. It isn't true! They will not attack a human. They will bite you, but they will not actively seek you out for evil doings. The defend, they do not attack. Everyone on this board will defend if provoked but really not likely to attack anyone.

So until a real study is completed and I can read how it was conducted, I am not biting off on the Hogs eat snake=no rattle anymore theory.

The next thing you know chickens will stop clucking. I saw a chicken in a hog pin clucking and scratching
those hogs came running the poor chicken did not have a chance it was eaten alive. LOL
rattle snake will always rattle when they need to. They rattle when they feel threaten.

I'm no expert, but I would assume it would take more than a few years for the rattlesnake to adapt that quickly.

I agree 100%. I got Rattlers and lots of Hogs, mine still rattle under certain situations. Been around Rattlesnakes most of my life, most won't rattle unless it's really hot outside or you start messing with them. Most I come across are pretty docile and always have been, even before Hogs showed up on my ranch in 1999.

I'm no expert, but I've been around rattlesnakes a lot of years. IMHO, and for what it's worth, rattlesnakes rattle as a warning because they have no desire to waste venom on non-prey. Not rattling because they allegedly "learned to do so to avoid being eaten by hogs" would defeat the whole purpose of the warning rattle...makes no sense to me at all. By the way, the rattlesnakes I have on my place have no reluctance whatsoever to rattle and I have a lot of hogs on my place!

I spend a lot of time in the field. I'm the main reason rattlers don't rattle anymore. Thanks to myself, chuck norris, and that guy who drinks that mexican beer, rattlesnakes want nothing to do with the rest of you.

But beware! If they mistake you for a certain democratic presidential candidate, they may decide it's best to just take one for the team.

I don't understand the saying that hogs kill and eat rattlesnakes. Did the one that got killed and ate have a buddy watching who went and told the whole population not to rattle anymore? I believe about not rattling to a non threat! But who knows?

Guess you guys don't remember those pigs eating that snake on the front porch, and Gus had to come outside and run em off.

I spend a lot of time inside Bass Pro and I bang on the glass constantly and I can never make the snakes rattle at me.

All kidding aside...I do appreciate a friendly heads up even if there is some false/truue information associated w it.

Please refer to Lonesome Dove Part 1 and don't you dare tell me it's not real.

I was referring to that exact movie. I like the last bite at the end where the scene stops. A snake comes from out of nowhere and latches on to his cheek. As cheesy as that is there is a better one. In the next scene, look at the snake in the water. It is so obvious it is a rubber snake it kills me. I love the movie. I can recite it word for word. The snake scene is the only ting in the movie that is cheesy.

Like I told my cheap azz hunting buddy, $200 snake boots are pretty cheap insurance vs. $50,000 round of anti-venom ...

Just don't "reach" in anywhere for a downed bird till you check for Mr. rattler, boots cant help you there...

Likewise.
I've hunted out there for 25 years and I can count the ones I've run across while hunting on one hand.

BUT, keep an eye out for them.
