I duck hunt a little. I really enjoy it but deer hunt much more. So I have a small pond that holds a decent amount of wood ducks that are there everyday. I plan to do a hunt soon. Would I need decoys on my end of the pond to ensure they came my way ? I've read that woodies don't decoy well. Thanks in advance for the help

Set up where they want to be and get there before they do. They sorta decoy, but prefer to land way off and swim to the "other ducks", so motion and good calling go a long way in my opinion.

Thanks for that info Ricky. I counted 13 drakes today all together with a few hens mixed in

Wood ducks don't decoy. Just be still and shoot a couple drakes. Beautiful birds.

They wont work a spread like mallards, but they will flutter down into a spread. Like I said before, they prefer to land 50 yards away and swim, but I've had them fly right into the decoys before. I hunt alot of woodies.

In my experience when hunting wood ducks on small water they tend to fly by several times and sometimes land well before legal. So just get there early. I had a great hunt a few weeks ago.

ha! hey when I was hunting a pond for woodies a week ago, I tied one wood duck decoy to the end of my fishing pole, no weight. Then would throw it out with my hand. When I could hear the ducks in the trees above me, I would jerk it around. Worked pretty good. In the past I've thrown 2 or 3 dekes, that's all. Often I use zero. There gonna come in pretty much regardless where I hunt.

I wish I could figure out how to post my pic from one drive. No worky.

If I were you, I would buy like 6 nice wood duck decoys, 4 drakes and 2 hens.

We have spots that are covered with wood ducks until a major front hits. They will land in our decoys a lot times with most of our shots on the water and as they are lifting off. They don’t work the spread, just dump in and land. A lot of times they show up before shooting time and stop coming in 20-30 minutes after LST.
