Question: When cold fronts push birds south, do the birds generally fly in ahead of the cold front or behind it? Important question if you are trying to time a dove hunting trip! Cold front coming to TX early next week.

They fly in on a north wind is my experience. I've seen them fly in with the front and towards the end of a front. No good answer except they'll be on a north wind.
Also, some fronts push birds in and some push birds out. Not all fronts have birds with them.

I agree with Stompy. Some of the best shooting I have had were the birds sailing in with a cold front.

My father in law would always tell me, wait for those big northern dove when that cold front hits. He was normally right. Birds fly after a front comes in.

Great question as I have thought about it many times. Great answers too.

appreciate all the answers... looks like mid week will be good for rolling plains.

Cheers,

I'm just praying I get my fix on dove hunting this year. Buster is mad at me.

Makes sense - much easier to 'fly south' hundreds of miles WITH the wind (north wind) rather than against (south) wind . . .
