I stopped by a couple of my fields in Kleberg County (Riviera) yesterday to check on how my the sunflowers are doing. We had caught some rain at the right time which really helped the sunflowers take off. We have a pretty good stand on most of the fields, while others are kind of spotty in places but thats ok because we have grain planted around the fields.

A lot of local birds are already in the fields and we have been seeing more birds show up each week. We are too far out to tell what opening weekend is for sure going to be like but I can definitely say that it will be excellent if things keep going the way they are. 4 Fields checked so far, 18 more in 3 other counties to go.

Good luck to everyone who is hunting Sept 1.

Will, I will be heading to Live Oak county tomorrow to check on my fields there. The rancher told me we had over 6in of rain out of the last couple of storms that came through. Darn good for the teal hunting also! Good luck to you this year.

Our place has gotten 8 inches so far this month. Really wondering how this will impact the sesame. Hopefully the doves find it at some point.

Live Oak county is looking pretty good, amazing rains.

Good luck to you and all your customers also

I guess anything is possible but we plant the same time every year and they are always ready right on time. Some of them are ahead of others in different areas. I am expecting them to be ready 3-4 weeks like they are every year.

great!...
I see many fields either too late or too early...
the tea-weed on my place is still in the bloom, so about a month it should be ready...
we dove shoot a lot in Oct...
only problem is so much rain, the ragweed is getting pretty big...

I drove through College Station this weekend on my way to Dallas. I saw lots of good looking goatweed fields north of CStat. It's doesn't look ripe yet the doves should have a feast there in late October.

My neighbor planted a 20 acre patch for the family to hunt, about 2 weeks ago the sunflowers were dried up. Now the doves have picked them clean. Hundreds of local birds were in the field for about a week until there was no seed left. Im glad we waited a little longer smile

Haiden-

Checked my sesame today in Live Oak county, it looks amazing. 3-4 feet high in some places, incredible thick and green. I saw just a few of the tallest plants with white flowers starting to form. How long after they start the flower will the doves be there to eat the seeds? Our first year with sesame, it's looking awesome, just unsure of timing?

Saw good numbers of birds in the county, but none to speak of on our place.... Yet.

From what you are telling me it sounds like your patch will be ready just on time or maybe a little after the 23rd. Once those white flowers start to bloom your on the third stage as we call it.
I think the birds will make a push with this North wind we have had. One of my guides told me today that he saw some bigger flocks of WW around Kingsville. We usually don't get those until later in the season. I think this North wind has something to do with that.

Thanks for the info.

I'm thinking our best shoots may be in October, give that sesame time to seed out.
