Anyone else use 28's on ducks?

I find myself carrying a 12ga less and less. 20ga isn't much different than the 12ga in my opinion. About the only days I can notice a difference between the two is when it's really windy and the birds get out of the hole fast on the 1st shot. Those are the only days I wish I had a 12ga over the 20ga.

28ga is a different story. Really needed a hole where the birds would finish and finish close. However, I was very impressed with the killing efficiency of the 28's. We had several 4 and 5 man limit hunts this year just using 28 gauges. Those were the most enjoyable hunts of the season for me.

Would love to go to .410's, but Benelli won't make a production run of .410 auto loaders and want too much money for a custom one off. grin

I have a .410 Remington 1100 I've always wanted to hunt ducks with. Never have got around to it though.

It's in my near future to purchase a 28 gauge. Since this topic came up, what gun is more sought after in that gauge for a overall use gun? Semi auto, O&U, SxS?

I have the same gun. No way I'd take it duck hunting.

We use the Benelli Legacy and Ultra Lite 28's. I have O&U 28's, but I'm not taking them duck hunting. I also have a Rem 870 28ga, but I'm converting it into a turkey gun.

I used one a couple times during teal season this year shooting those cheap Winchester steel #6's you can get for about $100/case on sale and loved it. That will probably be all I shoot next year during teal season. We hunt some pretty open marsh for the most part so taking one during regular duck season would not be a great idea. Ducks finishing inside 20 or 30 yards is not very common. We did have a few hunts in some prairie potholes that would have been perfect for a 28. Next year I will try and take it on a couple of those for sure.

Its my favorite gun.
Used it for dove, duck and even cranes this year.
Have the A400 beretta and its sweat.
Used federal nr 6 for decoying ducks and nr 4 heavy steel for higher ducks and cranes.
Amo is same price as 12 gauge. Your bedt bet is rogers for the 7.5 lead and 6 steal and macks for the heavy steel nr 4.
A good briley choke is a must. Used Skeet for dove and Light MOD for ducks/cranes

Also, the V3 remington was released today. I will buy it as it fits the metrogun. No more pumping!

Same here. It's all I will carry for early teal from now on. I have a case of those 6's, but for late season mallards it wasn't enough. Yes it would kill them at 20 yards decoying, but once the birds flushed out of the hole from the first shot the majority of the follow up shots resulted in cripples. We went to loading hevi and nice shot in 6 and 7's. It drastically reduced our number of cripples.

shooting any ducks other than teal or buffles w/a 28 is like shooting deer w/a 22 hornet...
yes it works, but there are better options...

the pellets flying out of a 28 are flying just as fast and hit just as hard as all the other gauges. The only difference is the number of pellets. Same with the .410. If you're going to hunt with a sub-gauge you need to practice, I suggest you practice even if you hunt with a 10ga. 3 1/2" mag.
As far as the cost of shells, I reload, it gives you something to do on rainy days when there aren't any seasons open. Ballistic Products has everything you need.

There is time, and you must take it, to lay your hand on your dog's head as you walk past him lying on the floor or on his settle, time to talk with him, to remember with him, time to please him, time you can't buy back once he's gone" GBE

A good many folks just do not understand what you just said or do not believe it.

Basically all shotguns shells are loaded to the same pressures because a shotgun barrel is only so thick. A 410 goes the same distance as a 12. The only difference is less pellets, so generally your effective pattern falls apart before the heavier gauges. Exceptions are the newer 3 1/2 12's that are rated for more pressure than even the mighty 10 gauge.

My father hunted quail with nothing but an 1100 in .410. It is a quail hammering machine. The patterns on a .410 are very elongated because of the small bore. It anchors quail shot in the pooper when flushed. The 12's pattern is wider than it is deep. Lots more broke wings, dropped legs and runners.

If I could afford a steady stream of the newish Tungsten shot, I'd be duck hunting with his old 1100 and my reloader would never quit singing. The little .410 bore isnt big enough for the larger shot sizes needed for ducks with steel.

Disagree. Shot strings between all the gauges are different, but I understand the point you are trying to make.

Yes Sir, I did not fully explain. Shot strings are different, as I pointed out with the depth of the .410.

Same goes for the big bad 3 1/2 12 gauge. They could make a 4 inch 12 gauge and it still would not throw as good of pattern as the 10 with large steel pellets. Shot string is just deeper....same as comparing a .410 to any of the larger diameter gauges.

Bore diameter trump all as shot size increases.

Screw a patternmaster in each and every gun you own, and you be good to go

I've been shooting a 410 on about 50% of my hunts and this is where I see a difference. Decoying and passing birds don't stand a chance but it sucks for dispatching cripples on the water. It looks like sprinkling pepper around the bird.

These birds would all say that the 410 shot hits as fast and hard as the 12 gauge shot...

Just got me a 28 ga legacy and looking forward to shoosting it next year.

I bought a 28ga on a kids gun recommendation, ended up buying 2 more over the last few years. We shoot big ducks, little ducks and geese with them shooting #6s and #7s. I like the reduced noise/recoil, easy feel on the swing. I seem to take/miss more shots when I use my 12ga.

There's always exceptions; it's just not something everyone can do. Now finding someone one this forum who says they can't do it--is next to impossible.
