I have a difficult one. I need to be able to plant something to boost protein and just generally feed, but don't have a tractor, plow, or even ATV. So it has to be a hand-scatter seed. Plus . . . the land owner runs longhorn cattle on the property. They have access to everything except my feeder pen (about 30 feet square). Is there something I could scatter that will grow pretty much on its own, and which the cattle won't particularly like? This is in north Texas, in Montaque county. It's dry right now, but hopefully will get rain before too long.

Might try a cereal grain mixed with clover. Cows will go for the grains, but probably leave much of the clover underneath. Might see if the farmer will let you fence off a small plot.

No, not really, seed to soil contact is important for germination, during the winter cows will eat anything green.
I've never owned a cow that wouldn't eat clover to the ground.

Probably best to consider a free choice protein feeder in a large feed pen. At least 10 - 16' panels arranged in a circle, preferably 12 -14.

If you planted about 200 acres in cereal rye then youll attract something... but the cattle will have it mowed down either way the deer will just get to pick at it here and there... better off by penning a feeder

Waste of time and money. Between birds eating the seed and cows eating anything green that pops up it's a losing proposition.

In the end, it's not the years in your life that count, it's the life in your years.

Yeah, they'll eat it, but clover seems to recover better. Especially if there is a cover crop like a grain that is more attractive. Your'e right though, with cows it's tough. They can eat a lot, and quick.

longhorns? uhh, yeah, good luck with that. longhorns will eat ANYTHING & everything (except cedar)
- stuff that beef/dairy cattle wont and even stuff deer wont touch.
I'm pretty sure they'd even eat my t-posts, if they could ever figure out how to get the wire off them . . .

Okay. Thanks to all for your comments. About what I thought, but had to ask.
