Those of you who process your own hogs......

Do you do it in warm weather? I've only hunted hogs in the winter, but now have a year-round place. How difficult is it to keep the meat good when it's not winter?

I hunt them in warm weather. You just need to get the cleaned and on ice as soon as possible. I've never tired this before, but I've seen a video of a guy using ice, water and slat to create slurry. He claims the slurry cools the meat extremely fast.

the meat can last in the heat a good while without being on ice... just get the guts out asap... I wait for winter to process hogs... shoot um and toss them this time of year.

that's more because of the diet they are on at the time... if I do clean one I just chop off the straps and be done

Mostly hunt cooler weather for hogs... As pappy once said: warmer the weather, faster need ta get meat on ice ...

May be a stupid question, but what is the diet now vs winter?

lots of grubs, bugs, meat this time of year... even a dead fawn or anyother dead animals they can scavenge on.. anything and everything available... berrys.. old pecans all that fun stuff.

during the winter they are limited to stuff like acorns, feed, roots.. maybe a lost deer or dead animal in the mix but not as much as in spring.

Skip gutting him. Just skin his back and pull the backstraps and get em on ice quick. U can also take some rib meat and cut some chunks of meat off his hind quarters.

I hunt them year round. In warmer weather, as soon as I shoot one, the hunting part ends and I load it up and head directly to the cleaning station. Once there, I get to work and skin it, then cut off the back straps and the leg quarters. I don't bother to gut them, even in the winter. If I'm with someone else, one of us will go into town for ice while the other works on the hog. Town is only ten minutes or so away, so the person getting ice can be back in under a half hour. If I'm alone, I process the hog first and then head for ice.

Basically, the meat will last long enough to skin and cut up the hog, but don't waste time. Once you shoot a hog, get busy. If you can have a bag of ice in advance, you could gut the hog and stuff the ice into the cavity to give yourself a little more time.

Most of my hog hunting is WMA Mstly hunt cooler weather.. Son & i took boat out whin it flooded.. Half way up river, realized forgot cooler.. Told son worry about it if we get hog... He ended up getting two, from past hunts learned ta carry back pac & trash bags... Wrather was little warm 60 or so degress.. We gutted, usually dont do that... Draged hogs ta boat, took trash bags... Filled with cool river water, stuffed in cavity... ed & chilled.. Always have old bottles, froozen in freezer, for prossessing If hunt in May at WMA its early morning, & closer ta parking area's... Around house, always have ice ready.. Best wishes... Edit: the the 10-12oz bottle water, refill with tap water, great for freezing..

done lots in summer, mostly smaller size, as far as spring & summer I think they are grazing and rooting just am much as any time.
