is there a scientific method to figure hog weight, I can estimate horse weight fairly close, I think hogs fool most people, 250 is most likely 175, I have pics of the biggest hog I ever took, bottomed the scales at 450, I had no idea.

Flintknapper Double Naught Spy has provided a measurement scheme that gets very close. I agree most over estimate the size of hogs.

A). Measure base of head to base of tail.
B). Measure girth behind arm over heart tightly.
C). Square girth and multiply that by head to tail measurement.
D). Divide total by 400.
E). Total gross weight
F). Multiply Total gross weight by .72
G). Total consumable/edible weight

Example:
A). 40" base of head to base of tail.
B). 42" girth
C). 42x42x40=70,560
D). 70,560 •/• 400 =
E). Total gross weight 176.4
F). 176.4 x .72 =
G). Total consumable weight 127.008

My experience is most people WAY OVER estimate weight of hogs.

So you're saying a 176# hog will provide 127# of meat?
