Had an interesting weekend at the lease this weekend. Was trying to get my wife on a pig for her first kill ever. After filling the feeders, putting an extra 50# bag of corn out and we went back the the cabin and she shot my .270 to make sure it was on for her. Before heading out around 3 the plumbers show up to fix the cracked pump, which delayed our leaving for the stand until about 5 and we climbed in at 5:10. We saw a whole lot of nothing that night and it wasnt until we got home and I checked the game cam card that we needed to be in the stand by 3:30 as this giant strolled in and stayed until 445

So I get up Sunday morning and the wife wants to sleep in. I get in the stand at 6:57 and look at the feeder before even opening the blind window and notice a large black spot at eating the corn we place out the previous day

Low and behold its a good sized boar and my hunt will be a quick one. Get the window opened and the 270 out get steady on the shoulder and let him have it at 6:58. The bullet hits him like a jack hammer and he rolls

He kicked once squealed and stopped moving. I giggled to my self and put the gun in the corner and decided to wait for day light to go get him. As I looked back up i see him get up and leave behind the feeder....i found it odd but seeing how he reacted to the bullet hitting him I wasnt too concerned and honestly in too much shock to get the gun back up and put another one in him.

I waited 30 minutes to go look and found no blood, and no pig after 1.5 hours of looking. I guess I hit too high on the shoulder or hes dead somewhere and I couldn't find him.

It was a fun weekend over all and glad the game camera caught all of the action as I learned a valuable lesson to go ahead and out another one in them.

Yep, pigs are tough and we all lose some. I've gotten in the habit of sending a second shot if they keep moving in hard to track locations.

He is a stunt pig who faked you out and spun with the shot.

... Feels like a Hollywood act sometimes

True enough. It's a good idea to keep an eye on them for a while even after they go down if you can. I've had a couple disappear while I was dragging their buddies out of a field.

yeah, on a solo pig I always keep an eye on them through the scope until the are done moving. If they are rolling or kicking they can and have gotten up and they can be gone quick if you aren't fast on the follow shots. That's where a semi auto helps vs bolt, but bolt I still very workable as the time it take to rack another round is seconds at most.

When I have a sounder and shooting at movers, I will shoot shoot shoot, and then come back to the ones I saw drop and watch them in a scanning motion to make sure none get back up or need second shots.

btw, nice hog but no monster. He is probably barely 2.5 feet tall but with a barrel chest. Would have gone close to 200 but not much more is my guess.

LOL. Reminds me of my first turkey. One shot, he folded like a deck of cards.
I was so excited, as I got out of the ground blind, I had to relieve myself so bad, stopped and took a leak.
Turned the corner of the blind to retrieve my bird, only to see him jump up and run off...... hammer.
Next time, TWO shots, at least.
