Im sure im not the only one on the forum with type 2 diabetes and i have a question for yall. I was at 300lbs for many years and in the last few years i started droping weight but still eating the same way. Im thinking thats weird and go see the doc and he says the diabetes is eating my muscle mass and now its got to the point i can barely walk and my arms and upper body are weak. Well im on meds and insulin and my blood sugar numbers are high stil. My question is has anybody else lost body muscle mass from type 2 diabetes? Honestly im thinking its something else and im not to impressed with the doc im going to and going to a specialist at the end of the month. Worst part is i missed my hunting for the first time since i was a boy and im 58.

Type 1 here but I have been through weight loss and muscle mass seriously and it isn't easy to put it back on. When sugars are too high the Kidneys work over time trying to get the glucose level lower. Since insulin is the key to allow the cells to use sugar, it I required and with type 2 the body doesn't use the Insulin properly so one does not brn the glucose for energy.

The body will do what it has to and start metabolizing its own protein aka our muscles to fule itself.

I recently went through some very serious issues and the body was converting my little fat and muscle to stay alive. I lost over 20lbs which I didn't have to loose, was in a coma and body temp at 84.5 when found passed out in my living room.

10 days of heavily drugged, intubation and immobility plus I don't know what all I had a heart attack and coded 2 minutes CPR and shocked to get the heart started. Docs tell me the heart attack was most likely from muscle loss and my body feeding on itself, or at least that one was but am another waiting to happen so getting ready for bypass surgery.

Bottom line. GET TO AN ENDOCRONOLIGST and get THOSE SUGARS UNDER CONTROL

What Kmon said. Get a new doc. While you notice the skeletal muscle loss, the body doesn't discriminate. It will metabolize protein from anywhere, heart, liver, etc.

Disclaimer: I'm no expert, but I take my diet and weight training pretty seriously. I also have an emergency medicine background.

For your situation, I would say Paleo is your best bet. You eat meat, vegetables, and a little fruit. No bread, dairy, sugars, etc. This doesn't mean never, but rarely get a little cheat meal (not a cheat day). You don't have to weigh your food and it's realistic to go out to dinner or a party and still get to eat. (Go without cheese, pull the bread off, etc). I love this diet because it's sustainable. You can do it for the rest of your life and you're not starving yourself. It's a high protein, high fat, low carb diet. Your body is used to powering itself on carbs. You switch that over and it will burn animal fats (from meat) and protein as it's primary sources of energy.

You don't have to count calories or points or weigh food. Eat good natural foods and your body will love you. You can take it as extreme as you want, true Paleo means eating grass-fed and organic stuff. That's expensive and makes it significantly more complicated. I would also caution you spending a crapton of money of almond flower and other emulator's for baked goods to emulate something you're not allowed to have at first. It's not gonna be as good as the real thing. Save the real thing for your cheat meal. I have a pretty lengthy write-up I've sent over to friends I would be happy to share with you. It includes some good recipes.

The Adkins diet, IIRC, is low carb but not necessarily high protein.
For instance, the Adkins diet allows you to eat lots of high fat foods, which is not good for someone with diabetes
I have not looked at the Adkins plan for many years, so maybe it has changed some.

If I were you I would get on a high protein diet and start some sort of resistence training. Start small, with hand weights and bands, but resistence builds muscle and protein is the macro in your diet that is the building block of all muscle mass in your body.
You cannot build muscle without enough protein in your diet.

You should look at .8 grams of protein per pound of body weight per day.
If you can have your body composition measured, you can adjust that as needed.

When you do this, up your water intake, you will need it to digest the protein. You should try to drink close to a gallon of water per day.
Tea and coffee don't count, infact, they dehydrate you.

You need to learn about food and what macro nutrients are in your food
It breaks down to fats, carbs, and protein

A gram of fat and carbs are both about 8 calories, a gram of protein is only 4 calories. Also if you concrentrate of eating higher protein, you will end up with less fat and carbs which is going to be a benefit for you in your condition.

Also, anything you can do to get your body fat lower will help.

I'm T2. Absolute best diet, in almost all cases, for a T2 diabetic is Keto. High fat, marginal protein and low to 0 carb. There is tons of information out there on it. The fact is, you're 300 pounds and diabetic. You're not eating healthy and it's going to kill you.

Find a good endocrinologist to start and to make sure everything else is okay and to monitor your blood work. Over the next 10 days, slowly start cutting your carbs and increasing your fat intake until you hit zero. This will help your body transition from glucose as a source of energy into ketosis, which is your body producing and utilizing ketones as it's source of energy. Your body simply cannot process the glucose anymore.

I was diagnosed T2 with an A1C of 10.7 at the age of 29. Now, my A1C hovers between 5.2 and 5.5. I workout a lot more now, which you need to start doing - just go for a walk for 30 min. a day, but the change in eating habits alone will make a big difference in three months.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ImkJgQeq4g - give this a view. It will explain diabetes and how the keto will dramatically improve your health.

If you had Agent Orange exposure you should monitor your A1c very closely. Mine tripped over 6.6 and my crusty old VA doctor gave me a very simple diet: (1) no bread or refined grains (2) no potatoes (3) no rice (4) no pasta (5) no sweets. Sounds brutal but the reality is that leaves quite a bit on the table. I followed his instructions and went into ketosis, lost 40 pounds and A1c dropped to 5.9 in 90 days. The first 30 days was tough, then not so bad, now a piece of cake. About 45 days into the program my energy had doubled. Never took any meds. A1c holding at 5.8 after 3 years.

are you on Statin for cholesterol ?

If so that's your culprit,,,,, Not diabetes

Change your diet and 99% of your problem will go away

stay away from processed food (you didn't get to 300 lbs eating venison and wild game meat )

eat wild game meat, organic food as much as possible,
Quit soda, beer
Drink nothing but water

your A1C will go down , you'll lose weight naturally , and gain your muscles back

Your diet is the problem

Hoyt I don't know how, but I missed your post. You described what I lived the past year. I got news, I'm building muscle and have gotten off almost all my meds. Here's my post.

I'm T2 since 08 probably before, it is has become a struggle I'm 5'7 and 162ish and I eat what I think (read and and learn as much as I can).
My wife will be taking some classes for cooking in the next week or so and I think it is a two week course. I lost over 40 lbs when
it was first figured out and alot of it was muscle.I see a endo and have since 2012 about every 4 months and it has helped very much.
I can go on with this but I,m not god with typing just reading and this thread has got me watching.

MODS DO YOU THINK WE COULD HAVE A STICKY FOR DIABETES?
