Bad decision on my part, but I thought I'd "repurpose" a couple of chunks of brass I had on hand by turning them into scales on an old Rigid knife blank I had on hand. I refuse to tell anyone how much time I spent sanding and polishing these pieces of brass. I finally gave up and called it a "finished product!" Never again!

Yeah.. That isn't anything to be ashamed of. you can still do some finishing on it, brass is rather easy to sand. Looks fine to me!

Thanks for the kind comments, guys. It's not so much that it didn't turn out "O.K." it's just that when I consider the hours and hours I spent trying to get it to the finish line! I figure that if I wanted to sell it, and assumed that my time was worth $10.00 an hour, I'd have to ask $9,000.00 for it. From here on out, it's Desert Ironwood or hard rock maple for any scales that I want to devote a lot of time to. crazy

I use a lot of spalted woods that are fairly soft, but hard as a rock after I stabilize them in cactus juice. I have some stabilized corn cob scales coming. Hard wood without stabilizing them are not all that, unless they are an oily type wood. Wood will expand and contract depending on humidity and have a tendency of cracking and splitting.
