I was drawn for the quail hunt at Big Bend Ranch State Park this week, and it's been awesome. Only one quail bagged so far (one more quick hunt to go in the morning) but the weather has been beautiful, the scenery is magnificent, and I have the entire place to myself -- only three of us showed up for the hunt, and the other two left Tuesday. The hunting is tough, a lot harder than hunting pen-raised birds over dogs (no dogs allowed on hunts here) and being by myself makes it even more challenging. Basically I walk 11-12 miles a day up steep hills and through brush hoping to find birds, and then be ready when I come across them. Still, I've flushed several coveys and if I could shoot worth a crap I'd have a lot more birds. At least I made a good shot on this one. It was well-earned, and anything taken on a public hunt is a trophy, right? I'm thinking of having it mounted.

That doesn't sound like any fun at all. Hunting quail alone for several days without dogs and killing one bird.... Not for me.

That doesn't sound like any fun at all. It was a lot of fun for me, because I prefer to hunt alone, even though hunting quail that way is much more challenging. Plus I had views like this:
