Starting to consider just staying home and skipping this hunt. Weather doesn't seem all that great and it's 4 hours away when I have a good spot to hunt an hour or so away. I'd hate to go all that way and it not be worth my time and money. for anyone with experience with the place would you make the trip or hunt the closer place you are familiar with?

I just called to see about going for standby and although they are open for drawn hunters they are not doing any standbys. So dont let the TPWD site fool you. It is wrong!

What a jip!

Looks like several of the hunts this week are going to not allow standbys. Guess they are wanting to limit damage to roads and stuff as much as possible, and fewer hunters is the easiest way to go.

Sounds reasonable. They also said they didnt allow standbys at that location last year.

1 hour from my house is much closer than where I hunt on Public Land in the Sam Houston Natl Forest so I was excited at the even small chance to hunt.

I hope you are going Sapper titan. I wouldnt miss it!

I had actually made up my mind I would go and then the front bearings went out on my truck the day before the trip. Front end sounded like it was gonna fall apart at 35 so took the truck to the shop but they didn't get done till around 10 am on the day of the hunt. I am about 4 hours away and had to be there around 11 so it was not possible. I called and let them know I wouldn't be there due to truck issues and they said they would let them know but there were no standbys so they didn't remove me from the list. I feel bad I took someone's slot but in the end there was nothing I could have done besides not go to west Texas the week before where I did the damage to my front end.
