I saw in the APH book that quail is legal in the Sam. Anyone ever go? Ive hunted deer there but its all woods so where I went so curious if there are even birds there. I have two GSPs that im dying to get in the field. Any tips for public around Houston for quail or pheasant is appreciated. Im sure they are scarce since it's so far east. Thanks in advance.

I've heard a lot about woodcock there but not quail.

Quail hunting is like walking into, and out of a beautiful painting all day long. Gene Hill

Very cool. May have to get the dogs some practice. Taking one on her first duck hunt in the am.

Been hunting the SHNF since I was a teen. I'm now in my 50's. Seen a covey exactly once. I was walking through a clear cut in the eastern section near Cleveland scouting for deer sign. They flushed out of the grass at my feet and dang near gave me a heart attack. That was about 10 years ago. Haven't seen any since.

I figured as much just based on being so east...was hopeful, but the woodcock peaked my interest. Ill still be hitting the sam come october for archery deer

Our place borders Sam on 2 Sides. I see woodcock a couple times a year but in almost 40 years I've only saw quail covies Twice

Does anybody hunt woodcock? It was kind of a big thing back home along with grouse. I'd absolutely love to give it a go, but I'm wary hunting during deer season.
