I have been selected to hunt at the James Daughtrey WMA in January 2016 for the gun deer either sex. I have been putting in for 10 years and have finally gotten drawn. I am super excited but have not hunted the area before. Would anyone have any tips about the hunting the James Daughtrey WMA? Which compartments seems to be the best, what type of stands are available, any photos you may have from the past and any other info you may have? Your feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I hunted there last year on the management hunt. All compartments are good and have plenty of deer. The best advise I can give you is to be sure to corn the heck of the area you are hunting. They respond to corn exceeding well there. Good luck.

It's a good place. I hunted the GDE there 2 years ago. Shot a very good 10, 20" wide. When I went though, corn was not allowed. Be sure you double check on that.

I will be there for the Management Gun Hunt in December. I will be hunting the North Shore Unit. I did hunt the Daughtrey back in the 90's but I've never hunted the North Shore unit. When I get back from my December hunt, I will email you what I saw and what others will tell me about the Daughtrey area. And, "YES", you can bring corn!

I hunt doves & rabbits at Daughtrey, and was on a drawn javelina/coyote hunt there last season. I mostly stay in compartments 14 & 15, and I almost always see deer there when I'm walking around, including some big bucks. I was there Saturday and saw two does and a fawn.

"Hunter Daddy" that sounds good. I will be waiting for you email. Thanks for all the info. Good luck on your hunt.
Everyone else that has replied thank you for the info as well. Every little bit of info helps out and by the sounds of it there will be a lot to look forward to.
Anyone else that would like to chime in, your help would be greatly appreciated. Has anyone else been drawn to hunt the GDE January 12 thru 15, this season?

Me and a buddy of mine hunted the GDE there hunt about 6 years ago. I saw a decent 8-point (100"), couple spikes and a few does. Never saw a big buck. Can't remember the compartment but it was on the southern side of the area. I think the areas closer to the headquarters was better based on reports from the other hunter's.

Been 7-8? years ago, but my pard and I drew a Javy Hunt, right before the Mgmt change. We hunted the South Shore, on the compartment that bordered the east side of the old hwy road that goes north to the boat ramp. That unit has/had a permanent tower blind w/out a roof, that looks due north up a cutover long enough to land planes in, and west that's even longer.
The javy's my pard took came out of the huisatch thickets just north of the Hwy from Tilden to 3 Rivers that was our south border. but I had to take the magazine out of my rifle I got so nervous looking at a monster 10pt'er feeding in the west cutover with his harem.
Saw thousands of hog prints on the sandy beach areas that we fronted, and rooted up hog damage mebbe 1/2 miles long and 3-4-500 yards wide in several places as we were on the end of a point into the lake and our pasture was the entire point...but never saw a hog in daylight.
The huisatch is so thick my pard was bleeding enough in a couple dozen places that we stopped and got him a antibiotic shot on the way back to North Texas...but that's where the javy's were and he killed them at under 60 feet.
If you drive off the jeep trails anywhere, make sure you have slimed all your tires and take at least 2 spares, as I lost 2 tires from being punched thru the sidewalls when we drove across one of the cutovers putting out corn. Boots with steel toes and arch supports would be good too, to keep the mesquite thorns from penetrating the soles. Ron

My son and I were out there for a youth management hunt in November, the weekend before Thanksgiving. We were assigned Compartment 3. On the way to the compartment. we saw a really big non-typical 8 point (2 on the left, 4 on the right)in the compartment between the office and compartment 3. After 5 minutes in the stand (~2:00 PM, after putting out 2 bags of corn) we had a Huge, heavy, typical 8 point came out, and we watched him all afternoon. He would wander off and return every few minutes, depending on what the javelinas were up to. We also saw another 7-8 "average 8 point" bucks, and a decent 9 point - though nowhere near as big as the "Big 8" that hung around all day. We also saw 3-4 smaller 4-6 point bucks, and a whole bunch of javelina (at one point there were 19 around us) We did not see any spikes. My son had a tag for a spike or doe. Finally, just after sunset a nice doe showed up. It seemed to take forever for her get clear of the cactus between us, and the buck watching her from another 70 yards behind her. When she finally did get clear, my son made a perfect shot, and that was it.
My advice is to listen to Chris, the huntmaster. He'll point you in the right direction. And get a backpack that can hold a bag of corn comfortably, and plan on packing in a bag or 2. Even though we had a bunch of javelina eating the corn, they really didn't eat too much. We camped in the campground across from the office in a tent. The campground has parking spots you could back a camper in to, but no electrical or water. The place is AMAZING.
Best of Luck!!!
