My boys and I had a great time on the Matagorda Island youth hunt last weekend. The Parks and Wildlife employees were super nice and helpful. It was as advertised a "primitive camping hunt" and in that it was challenging. We took my 18' pontoon boat across the bay and pitched our tent on the boat. That seemed like a brilliant idea at the time, end result was "so-so". We did not get a deer, but most of the kids tagged out. It was just bad luck that we did not get anything. As their is no cover to speak of and no baiting allowed, the deer just come out where ever they want. There is very little rhyme or reason to their movements and we just missed out. A nice 7 point and 9 point were taken and both were mount worthy. All in all a great time and we will go next year even if we are not drawn. Because of the difficulty getting to the island and the primitive camping there are always spots available (according to the 4 groups who came standby and got to hunt)

I am very proud of my boys, even though we did not get any deer, they both had a great attitude about it. My youngest started getting sick and apologized for ruining the hunt! When we got back took him to the Dr. and he tested positive for strep and the flu! What a trooper! Love these kids!!!

That is awesome! Great pics, great write up. Those kids will remember that adventure for the rest of their life. You will too!

Thanks for the info. My son got picked this year for a hunt. I was needing advice on the camping. Could you not drive a boat back and forth and stay in a hotel? I know its a 11 mile ride in the dark.
