Anyone ever hunt out there for coyotes? Was wondering if it was worth it to take my 15 year old cousin over there with the AR and do some calling while we are camping in Big Bend.

I see it says predator hunts by phone reservation? Does anyone have experience with the "phone reservation". Is it just to check in?

When I was quail hunting there two or three years ago, I camped at one of the river camps. Had Coyotes for sure run through camp every night and who knows what else. http://texashuntingforum.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/2144096
The entrance is not far north of the NP. If I was going to be nearby anyway, I know I would want to spend a day coyote hunting there.

Great write up Sniper John. I just found in my APH booklet where I missed the hunt on Jan 16-18th only for predators and cant do it. Oh well it was worth a try.

Bigfoot...go look at the TPW archives in their website, for stats from earlier years on that Category & Hunt to see all kinds of neat info. I always research Lottery sites to see how successful how many participating hunters have done in years past. Only thing it won't tell you, as I remember is the dates of previous Hunts.

I went on a Mule Deer hunt out there about 10 years ago. I saw a lot of coyotes while deer hunting.

For the life of me I can't understand why they don't open these places for more predator and hog hunting. They complain of predation on quail and turkeys plus the damage the hogs do to places......

With all of that wasteland out there it would be nice to be able to go shooting out there like they do in the deserts in California and Nevada

They only allow varmint hunting as you mention. Yotes, bobcats, lions and an occasional black bear. They only want you bird hunting as the desert bighorns come first. Best to avoid La Linda and the bridge. Had a run in with smugglers there and got "debriefed" by US Customs before it was over. Only trouble we ever had though. Big beautiful country, but don't go if you like or need electricity or cell phones. Also, take everything you may need as a breakdown or other issue can really leave you in trouble. You won't get help anytime soon if you have problems. Been going 13 years straight and love it.
