I am looking at this one. How do I tell how it compares to others and if it is worth the money.

Rent one.

I bought the MKii and would do it all over again.

How far out are you hunting most of the time and do you already have a handheld thermal spotter? Reason I ask is with that big a lens and a 12 micron core you'll have a small field of view and it will be great for accurate shooting but for spotting might not be so great. If it's your only thermal and that's your budget maybe look at a $5000 thermal plus a $3000 spotter instead of an $8000 scope. All depends on your use. If you mostly hunt out of blinds and rarely hit fields then it's probably fine. I find I use my handheld about 10 times what I use my dedicated scope.

If he's looking at mkIII's I highly doubt he'd even be considering an entry level scope like that apex. Not that it's not good for what is because for the budget end of thermal it's about the best along with the basic Zeus.

I have a PVS14 and a FLIR Scout PS32.

Most shots are toward the feeder....50 yards if I stalk, 200 yards if I'm lazy and just shoot from the driveway.

School me on the field of view.....I thought the 4.5 power FOV would be similar to my 4X daytime scope.

FWIW - This is going on an IWT built 6.8SPC.

It'll be just fine since you have a handheld to scan with. It's not bad unless you're trying to scan with it solely.
