I'm looking into buying a Vortex Viper 6-24X50 PST for long range shooting.

Vortex Viper 6-24X50 PST Review

I am building a rifle for 1000 yard target shooting. It will go on my 260 rem build. I keep finding the Vortex for $950. How does it match up for 1000 yard stuff against the Bushnell Elite 6500 4.5-30X50 at the same price, or the Leupold VX-6 4-24X53 at $1400? How do they compare in quality and function. Any knowledge would help about how they compare before I spend the cash.

The VX-6 is not a long range scope. It most likely has superior glass but does not have the mechanics needed for long range. Leupolds long range offerings are the MK series. Mk4, mk6, and mk8 if your rich.

One thing that is for certain is the Leupold and Bushnell will have the edge in glass quality. As far as other aspects go the group really is kinda split as you have the pst that has tons of features while the other 2 are mostly hunting scopes.

What about Nightforce SHV? Optics are a lot better than Vortex, the best mechanicals, and plenty of internal adj. just over $1200.

The VX6's come with CDS knobs and I believe you can request a M1(moa)knob instead of a custom dial. With the TMOA reticle, I think its a very nice hunting scope that can be used for long range shooting also. confused2 But I'm no expert....

Vortex everyday and twice on Sunday. I bought a used Vortex Viper 6-24x50 FFP for 650! What a steal, also bought same scope but in 4-16x50 for 600 used, another great deal.

I sent the 4-16x50 into Vortex to check out because it had some dings and scratches, they sent it back in a week. The note said the tube was damaged so they gave me a brand new scope, that is amazing customer service and they won my business.

What I have seen is you will need the Vortex warranty! LOL
I have used Leupold for 25 years and have never had a scope need their warranty. Unless I damaged it my self. The one time I did damage the scope myself they replaced it no questions asked even though I told them what happened.

Leupold has a similar reputation when it comes to reliability in the turret twisting world.

I have never had a issue.
I would go with a used Nightforce NXS or a new Nightforce SHV around his budget. (2nd choice)

Vortex or Swfa ss hd

Vortex 4x16 on my 300 win mag mrad
Swfa hd 5x20x50 on my 338

Vortex out to 800 yards I stayed around 10 magnification. Never had a issue with either scopes and I beat the vortex up pretty good

Is your Viper 4-16 FFP? Do you mean you stayed on 10X b/c of clarity issues above 10X?

It's clear on max just not as clear as my swfa.. Which I have never used either of my scopes at Max power. I like to stay around 10-12x for my eyes

I like the vortex for ffp, and the mil/mil turrets and reticle, keeps it simple. I think you're getting alot of scope for the money. Never ran the swfa ss so can't comment there but I've never heard anything bad about either. I've spent some time behind a mk4 on a m1 ebr, glass is good but mechanically and practically, I think the vortex is better. JMO

Just curious, what failures have you experienced with vortex (first hand experience), other than physical damage?

Ok, I ask because I've seen a lot of complaining about the clarity on these above 12X. If that's not an issue and they function well mechanically, I really like the size and mag range of the PST 4-16 scope.

It is the FFP model then?
