I have a reasonable number of fixed power scopes. I've got 1x, 2.5x, 4x on a couple of my air rifles, two 7x low light scopes, two 10x scopes, and three 36x scopes, two el cheap, one pretty decent. Plus there are 2x, 4x and 7x pistol scopes. If you're going to buy inexpensive scopes, my belief is that the fixed power models are more durable. That said, a number of my fixed scopes are higher end models (IOR, Kaps, Meopta). Fixed power scopes are lighter (usually, not IOR), simpler, and are one less thing to mess about with when hunting. For hunting under well known conditions, they're pretty hard to beat. They also have a number of limitations. For example, I can't load test for accuracy with a 4x or 7x scope; I have to switch out to one of the 36x scopes. It's also hard to shoot a 200 lb hog at 10 feet with a 7x scope, so I bring a .45 Colt for approaching downed game.

I have two. A Burris 2.75x20 mounted on a Ruger Gunsite Scout (mounted "scout" style) and it works great. It's compact and light, good brightness. I also have a Leupold FX-II 4x33 on a Ruger #1 International in 7x57 Mauser. It's just enough scope for that round and, again, I like the compactness of it and it doesn't ruin the great lines of that rifle. Neither of these scopes broke the bank and both work very well for what they're used for. The GS Scout is primarily for pigs/deer in the woods, the #1 is used primarily on WT out to 200-250 yards or so. I could stretch it a little further than that but would probably go to 6x40.

edited to add: Oh yeah, I also have a 50+ year old Bushnell Banner 3-9x30 who's mag-ring is frozen at about 6.5x. It's on a Remmy 742 Woodsmaster in .308. Does that count?

Only fixed power I own is cheap tasco's that came on Pelet rifles I had as a kid.

With modern technology and a quality company I will take a variable every time. Could you shoot a deer at 200 yards with a 4x scope? Sure, but given the opportunity to choose I don't know anyone that would.

Have a Redfield 2.75 on a Mauser, another on a lever 30-30, and Weaver K6 on a 243. I grew up using lower power scopes, still have some old firearms that get the job done. I'm sure these $700-1000 plastic stocks are great after people spend hours getting them to fit, but I still prefer wood.

I have heard a lot of people say they really like SWFA's fixed power scopes, especially the fixed 10x.
I personally have never had the opportunity to try one though.

I love fixed power scopes... especially 6x. I have El Paso Weavers, Burris, and Leupold fixed power scopes. Simple, light, and rugged. I wish that modern 6x scopes were more available.

I have one of the early Tasco 4x32 (made in Japan ~1981) on an H&R 700 .22mag and it is one of the clearest and best light-gathering scopes I've ever seen. I've killed more jackrabbits with that rig...

Hog or deer, I would go 4x max. Varmints 10x.

swfa has the bang for the buck on fixed 10x scopes.
I think Leupold makes some nice 4x.

Count me in for a quality 6x42. I think a 6x42, with a great 1/2 mil reticle, has the potential to be the perfect mid-longer range hunting scope.

Too bad the general public doesn't see it our way.
