2 months I believe is recommended; the state will send you a notice. I just waited for the notice then renewed online.

I waited for my renewal notice. I'm not positive but I believe I got my notice about two months before it expired.

I received my notice about 5 months before expiration.
I am still looking for the perfect apron, one with reinforced knee areas would be perfect.

I sent in my renewal the first week of August. My chl didn't expire until Sept. 30. I finally received my renewal
Oct 20. I thought that was enough time for my renewal but I ended up without a license for three weeks. Make sure you send
it in way in advance. I think you can do it 3 months in advance, maybe more.

You can apply for renewal up to 6 months before it expires.

From what I have seen the renewal comes in 6 months before your expiration
