Anyone hunt this area? May try to go look at a lease near the lake this weekend and was looking for general information, good or bad, before I spend the day going out there...

I love Coleman. We hunt the western side of the county between Talpa and Valera. Good deer numbers, good turkey hunting and some of the best dove hunting in the world. We've got pigs now too! If you like the place I'd go for it.

It has been a few years since I hunted that way, but my experience with the area was pretty good. Lots of deer and turkey! A friend of mine had a ranch just a couple of miles west of the lake (he sold in 2012) and it was "rich" in wildlife.

CRA, that is close to where we hunted - on 2132 between 153 and 67. The ranch was LOADED with turkeys, and good size deer. I took a nice 9 point, and a 13 point off the ranch. South Compaso is (may have been renamed after sold) the ranch name and it was a hunter's paradise. Great fishing as well. In the final year or two before it sold we started seeing more and more hogs, and the turkey numbers were declining a bit, probably due to drought. I missed hunting there so much I ended up buying my own property about 40 miles east of there, but in Brown County.

Have a place close to Valera--also more land toward Crews and Winters...very good hunting in spots.

I've hunted Santa Anna which is about 20 miles away. Deer small and not too many.

I drive through there at least once a month and see good deer numbers. I'm seeing more hogs near Crews these days, and have seen several coveys of quail as well. I suspect you'll find a good place when you get there.
